Metabones MBSPMD-X-BM3 Overview

The Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Minolta MD-Mount Lenses to FUJIFILM X-Mount Camera from Metabones allows a full-frame Minolta MD-mount lens to be mounted onto a FUJIFILM X-mount camera. The adapter's optics help to maximize the connected lens's apparent angle of view while providing a 1-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range.

If a lens intended for 35mm film or similarly sized full-frame camera sensors is connected to a camera with a FUJIFILM X-mount APS-C-sized sensor, it would project an image larger than the APS-C sensor was built to accept. Able to capture only the center portion of the projected image, the effective angle of view of the lens would be narrowed, creating an in-camera "crop factor." The Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter condenses the light from a lens designed for 35mm film or "full frame" camera sensors and projects it onto a Fuji X-mount APS-C sensor. This allows the APS-C sensor to utilize more of the light gathered by a connected lens, which effectively reduces the crop factor while making available to the sensor an additional 1 stop of light for each of the lens's f/stop settings.

This adapter is constructed from aluminum alloy for durability while minimizing weight and its mounting rings are made with brass to further prevent wear-and-tear. Inside are five lens elements in four groups that are designed to provide optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and a detachable tripod foot is included that features 3/8" threads as well as compatibility with Arca-Swiss tripod heads.

This adapter does not support electronic communication between an attached camera and lens, focus and exposure must be set manually.

Metabones MBSPMD-X-BM3 Reviews

Badly Calibrated

The product I received was so badly out of calibration that not only would lenses not focus to infinity (they only focused out to a few meters), but the rear of the lenses actually hit the SpeedBooster’s optics when trying to focus to infinity. They must not do any factory calibration of these things at all; it’s many millimeters out of adjustment. For such a premium price, you’d expect better assembly and quality control.

I wrote a review previously about the infinity focusing issues and mechanical incompatibility with my Minolta lenses. I bought a cheap off-brand focal reducer from overseas for less than a fifth of the price and compared it to this premium-priced Metabones one. The cheap one is equally sharp and it has none of the egregious problems. I'm declaring the Metabones defective by design. Honestly I'm kind of incredulous that they are selling this item, it's as if they haven't even used it before shipping it. The Metabones Speed Booster Ultra is so, so good for other lens mounts, it's astonishing how bad the Minolta-mount version is.

Hi Dan from B&H, there's a significant list of MD lenses that don't work with this adapter. I'm looking for someone who has used this combination. Read the reviews of this product and Metabones compatibility description of this speed booster.
