Not many other options!

Pretty solid but worried about length, connection strength

It's exactly what is described. Good tough cable housing, no issues with connectivity and communication with the camera. However, I'm a bit worried that a solid tug on the cable will disconnect either at the camera end or at the handle end. Also, it's a bit long if you don't have an extended handle, but this is easily solvable with ties.

can I use the $2 dollar Pearstone 3.5mm Stereo Male to Female Extension Cable instead of this?

No, using the Pearstone 3.5mm Stereo Male to Female Extension Cable, or any standard 3.5 extension cable, won't work because it doesn't have the necessary data connections that allow the handgrip to communicate with the camera.
