Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Overview

Presenting an ultra-wide field of view, the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is a sleek and wide-eyed prime lens characterized by its portability, advanced optical design, and intuitive handling. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements to greatly reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion. A Nano AR Coating has also been applied to further reduce surface reflections and flare for improved contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions. Benefitting the optics, this lens also sports a dual XD Linear Motor system that is quick and quiet, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also has a dust- and moisture-sealed design, along with a fluorine coating, to support shooting in inclement conditions.

Ultra-wide prime lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 30mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and helps to maintain a relatively compact form factor.
Two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements help to greatly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations in order to accurately render scenes with a high degree of sharpness.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Dual XD Linear Motor system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. An AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
Customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Reviews

Great wide angel Sony lens!

I needed a wider angle lens for my brand new Sony A7 IV camera. After I read the reviews, this was the best option and I'm so happy that I got this one. I would suggest this lens whoever needs wide angle, and the low light capability in f/1.8 is a huge plus! Especially for night time photography or in video!

Great performance

I have compare it to the 24mm GM lens, and frankly it's very similar in performance. The 24mm GM will be slightly more resolving, and have better flare control, yes also it's a f1.4 lens. However, value wise, this 20mm f1.8 G lens is great.

Great sweet spot between 24mm and ultra wide. Very usable for astro, landscape, vlogging (if you are into that), and many other things. Fairly lightweight compared to other similar lenses, so I can take it hiking/backpacking etc. without it weighing me down too much. It's not cheap, but way less than the 24mm GM so some might even consider it a good value in comparison.

Many prime lens users appreciate the simplicity, performance and lighter weight of a prime lens as compared to a bulkier, stabilized/zoom lens. That's my guess.

Could it be mounted in a not full frame as the Alpha 6600. And what focal length would result?
Asked by: Marcelo
I am using it with the a6600 and it’s a fantastic combination. It balances quite nicely and feels great in the hand. The autofocus is lightning fast and love the manual aperture ring.

Would this lens be overkill for a Sony a6000? Looking for a solid ultra wide angle lens for the a6000 but I can't determine whether this has features that I won't be able to take advantage of on my camera.
Asked by: Marc
This lens is quite basic with manual aperture selection. There is no lens stabilization. The effective focal length will be 30mm on the APS-C sensor of the a6000. I have used this lens on both an A7 and A7R4 so I can't comment on actual results on the a6000. That said, I have been very happy with the FE 20mm f/1.8 G, it is lightweight and delivers great results in low light.
