Glyph Technologies External HDD Reviews
BUILT LIKE A TANK
These things are built like absolute tanks. I got turned on to these drives by a friend of mine who swears by them. I edit a lot of BMPCC6K and RED Komodo footage so having a drive that always works reliably and consistently is key. This thing handles 4K footage like a breeze, and in Davinci it can work through 6K footage at 50% resolution with relative ease, even while doing some pretty heavy node based color grading. I will always recommend these drives as solid video editing drives.
This drive constantly stops running
The drive stops repeatedly for no reason and my MAC sends error messages. It only has 3TB on the 16TB drive and can't handle it.
Impressive Hard Drive
I bought two of these 20TB . I am using one to make a Time Machine backup of my Mac Pro Max Laptop and one to make a Carbon Copy clone of an external SSD where all my photos and HD videos are stored. I very pleased with the build quality of the drives and the speed doing the backups.
GLYPH 18TB does the job.
Hard to find 18TB Enterprise Class quality at such a great price. I'm now tempted to get another one for a mirrored backup.
Wow. Just...wow.
We bought 4 of these in late 2021 thinking we could use them for short term project storage since they're pretty fast and very large. Within a month, our 1st one started having improperly disconnected issues on my MacPro Tower and my assistant's MacBookPro. I tried changing out the power and the cable to the computer, but continued to have issues. So I broke out the second drive, transferred my 4TB of project over, and started talking to tech support. Then the second drive had the same issues. I tested them and found a variety of glitches in our files, so we sent them both in for repair. Glyph couldn't find anything wrong with them, but they sent me new drives. Yay customer service. I copied the files over to an OWC raid (also available at B&H), and haven't had any issues with that system, so I have to assume it's the drives, not the files or the computers. Since I have 4 drives that I don't really trust to work off of, I tried using them as temporary backups just to see how they behave. I have footage on more trustworthy drives as well, so this is purely a redundancy/test. We don't use the drives often, just plug in to download footage, then back on the shelf. And today we got 16 didn't eject properly error messages on my business partner's MacPro over last night's transfer. There is something wrong with the batch, I guess. I'm super disappointed because they weren't cheap, and they have lots of room, but I just can't trust them. Tech support was friendly, but obviously didn't fix the issue. We've tested them on at least 4 computers (2 MacPros (2019), 1 MacBookPro, 1 Mac Studio), and maybe they just want to be on a Windows machine. But don't put anything important on them.
So very disappointing
The product continues to shut down. I am assuming it is an overheating issue due to the heavy rubber jacket. Shut it down and let it cool then restart it and it works but I can't work like this. I will never buy Glyph Tech again. Once bitten and all that
Outstanding drive
Solid, robust, quiet, fast, and trustworthy. What more can you ask for for in a spindle drive? Plus, it looks beautiful.
Fast and quiet
T4 connection plus i/o makes this drive ridiculously fast and super quiet compared to same thing in wd book external drive
