Cre8audio NiftyCASE Powered Eurorack Case with MIDI to CV

The Cre8audio NiftyCASE is a portable powered 84 HP Eurorack case with MIDI to CV conversion capabilities. The unit's flying busboard can power up to 10 modules, providing industry-standard power with over 1500mA of +12V, 500mA of -12V, and 500mA of +5V.

The case can convert MIDI inputs to CV, gate, modulation, and clock information, allowing you to integrate your modular rig into your DAW/MIDI system. The top of the unit features both USB and DIN MIDI inputs, with the converted signals showing up on standard 3.5mm outputs located on the front of the rack. The CV 1 and Gate 1 outputs respond to MIDI channel 1, while CV 2 and Gate 2 respond to MIDI channel 2. If you play a chord on MIDI channel 3, the lowest note is sent to CV 1 and Gate 1, while the highest note is sent to CV 2 and Gate 2 (single notes are sent to both outputs simultaneously). Modulation information sent from your MIDI keyboard is converted and sent to the Mod output. MIDI clock information sent to the NiftyCASE is converted to 1/8 note triggers on the Clock output.

The NiftyCASE offers two 3.5mm audio inputs on the front panel which are summed to the 1/4" output on top. The top of the unit also features the power input for the included wall-wart power supply, the power button, and a DIN MIDI Thru port.

Cre8audio Chipz Dual VCO with LFO Eurorack Module (12 HP)

The Cre8audio Chipz is a 12 HP Eurorack synthesizer module designed to provide 8-bit chiptune-style voices and adds an LFO to your modular rig.

The module offers two voltage-controlled oscillators, Chip 1 and Chip 2, each with a choice of sine, triangle, saw, square, and noise waveforms; the variable-control knob allows you to morph between waveforms. Both oscillators feature tuning knobs and CV tuning inputs. Patching into the tuning inputs causes the tuning knobs to act as 2-octave-up or 2-octave-down transposers. Chip 1 has a filter with a CV input and depth knob, while Chip 2 offers pulse width modulation (PWM), also with a CV input and a depth-control knob.

The single LFO also offers a continually variable choice of sine, triangle, saw, square, and noise waveforms for your modulation pleasure. Rate and depth knobs control the modulation, which loops continuously unless you trigger the loop via CV by patching into the Reset input. The LFO has two outputs, Output 2 is four times the speed of Output 1.

Cre8audio Cellz Programmable CV Touchpad Eurorack Module (12 HP)

The Cre8audio Cellz is a 12 HP Eurorack module featuring 16 touch-sensitive pads, each of which can output two different unipolar CV values (on two separate outputs). The pads can be played in real time, sequenced, or arpeggiated.

Values for the cells/pads are set by selecting the cell and pressing the tune 1 or tune 2 button and dialing in the desired control voltage value with the left knob. CV values can be quantized to traditional chromatic values (notes) over a limited range or set to unquantized values over a wider tuning range. The cells can be sequenced externally by patching a trigger into either of the two inputs labeled with arrows that indicate the direction of the sequence. Touching and holding a cell interrupts the sequence, resuming once you release your finger.

Holding several cells at the same time arpeggiates the notes held, with the speed and number of repeats for the arpeggiator dialed in using the black knobs.

Cellz also offers two gate outputs that send a trigger when you touch a cell or when a trigger is received at either of the sequencer arrow inputs.

Cre8audio Box 'o' Cables Eurorack Patch Cables (3 Pairs of Different Lengths)

The Cre8audio Box 'o' Cables is a set of three pairs of patch cables of varying lengths. The cables all feature 3.5mm mono/TS connections at each end, making them ideal for use with Eurorack modular synthesizer setups. Included are two 17.7" cables, two 13.8" cables, and two 7.9" cables.

Cre8audio NiftyCASE Reviews

Great case, modules are...ok

The NiftyBundle case is a great starter Eurorack case for anyone looking to get into modular synths. It's simple, has a reliable power supply and audio out ports to connect to speakers or headphones. The Chips module is ok, but a bit noisy and hard to get a clean signal without buzz. The Cells module is annoying to use, especially for a beginner, which is who I feel this case is marketed towards. I would have just bought the case if the bundle hadn't been on sale, so I think it was still worth paying a tiny bit extra for the two modules. I'll likely replace both modules within the next several months, though.

Excellent value, unusual modules

I'll start by saying that the incremental price difference between the case only and case+modules makes it almost a no-brainer to get the bundle; accounting for $10ish for the cables and blank panels you are looking at $30 each for the two modules: this is about as cheap as you'll ever see a module, least of all ones with this level of functionality. As for what they are like, they are both interesting, but neither is a 'must have' in the context of a larger system. They also only work with unipolar voltages which is an odd pairing with respect to other eurorack modules. Cellz is an interesting controller/sequencer and I can definitely see it getting some use, but overall I find the interface and experience using it to be a bit strange. Two tuning knobs but you can only reasonably tune one oscillator at once, no ability to adjust the gate length, only the x/y inputs for advancing the sequence, a very limited range in quantized mode: it does its job but the experience it provides is a little quirky. Chipz is a similarly mixed bag. The two oscillators are quite different in volume and seem a little temperamental when tracking (despite being digital). The LFO doesn't go super slow or super fast and isn't that usable when 'synced' as an envelope. The filter parameter doesn't close fully, so it won't let you use that channel in the LPG fashion. The second channel does have a shape range that extends to 0, but doesn't so so in a particularly musical manner. The duo of modules is a great starter pack and far more interesting than getting an empty case, but I can't imagine that many users keeping hold of them longer term due to their quirks and limitations. As for the case itself, I am surprised how solidly constructed it is; it feels very robust with rolled metal and wooden end cheeks. The rails are reasonably robust too, though don't feel as cleanly threaded as I've seen on more costly cases. Feature wise, the two channels (fixed to MIDI channel 1 and 2) of CV+Gate plus mod wheel give you a lot of scope to interface with external hardware. Add to that the clock output (2 PPQN from MIDI clock) and you have a level of integration with a broader MIDI system that would otherwise need at least 2 modules taking up rack space. Similarly the output is nice to have, though the two inputs get mixed to one output and offer no volume control or balancing between them; again, this would typically need another module were I using a different case. All in all this is an impressive starter modular case that I could see remaining useful, even when you outgrow it (if just for the MIDI connectivity). The modules are not the most interesting and I'm sure they'll end up being sidelines longer term, but at the price they are hard to say no to. I'd describe this bundle as a pretty hard to beat value proposition and entry way into the world of eurorack synths.
