FotodioX MY7-GFX-FSN Overview

The Pro Fusion Smart Adapter from FotodioX allows a Mamiya 7 Rangefinder lens to be used on a FUJIFILM G-Mount GFX camera. If the lens includes camera-controlled aperture functions, this adapter is intended to allow those features to be used. If an attached lens is also capable of generating Exif metadata when used with a directly compatible camera, this Pro Fusion Smart Adapter is designed to allow that information to be saved along with image files generated with a combination of the lens, a FUJIFILM G-Mount GFX camera, and the adapter.

By enabling camera-controlled aperture functions for a Mamiya 7 Rangefinder lens when used with a FUJIFILM G-Mount GFX camera, program and aperture-priority modes, as well as shutter-priority and manual modes, can be set through the camera. Power for these functions is transferred from the camera to the lens. To help ensure that electronic communication between an attached camera and lens is reliable, this Pro Fusion Smart Adapter features a camera-to-lens calibration button. After a compatible camera and lens are both attached to the adapter, the camera-to-lens calibration button is designed to be pressed once the camera is be powered on. Signals between the CPU contacts within the camera's mount and the CPU contacts on the lens bayonet are then synchronized along with the functions they control.

This adapter is constructed from aluminum alloy for durability while minimizing weight, and its mounting rings are made with brass to further prevent wear-and-tear.

FotodioX MY7-GFX-FSN Reviews

A one-of-a-kind for fans of the Mamiya 7.

To the point, this adapter is a fantastic solution to mount legendary Mamiya 7 lenses on a GFX. Incredibly well made in its build with thoughtful firmware to send both aperture & focal length EXIF data. With my back of the napkin understanding, the adapter is powered by the camera which opens the leaf shutter in the lens - and the shutter in the body, whether mechanical or electronic, acts to capture the images. You can use flash, as well, up to the sync speed of your camera using the mechanical shutter in the body. It is, to my knowledge, the only adapter of its kind. I'm grateful to Fotodiox for making this & my only regret is I wish I had bought it sooner! To further expand, I rarely write reviews but I thought, with the mixed bag here, it'd be helpful to others to who are curious. The adapter - or, rather the system - does have drawbacks but it may be helpful to elaborate a lil. To better explain, the issue that I have is that I have to cock the shutter of the lens more often than I thought. Just remember, the leaf shutter is powered by the camera - and how GFX fluctuates power, well, I can't say. For instance, the leaf shutter on the lens will close when playing back images on my GFX 50R. It's a bit of a drag, but my assumption is because the power of the camera must shift from a taking mode to a display mode - the power signals change & the leaf shutter then closes. It is quirky, yes. You also have to reset the adapter when you change lenses if you want the EXIF data. Using flash is possible, but not perfect. And it's all manual focus, obvs. Most importantly, tho, the images are just wonderful. I absolutely love my Mamiya 7, and I'm thrilled that I can use these lenses on my GFX. The results, with the film simulations & aspect ratios, very closely match what I would shoot with my Mamiya 7. The focus peaking of the GFX is very accurate, and my images are very sharp. If you dive deep into more forums & reviews, you'll see deeper, more technical comparisons lens by lens - and all with criticisms that are surely valid. So, do that if you feel the need to but I'd say to try this & decide for yourself. As odd as it is, it is a very similar process to shooting on my Mamiya 7. I'm able to use the aperture on the lens ring, and then use the internal light meter of the GFX. If I set the shutter speed on the GFX to A, then I'm essentially in Aperture Priority which is mainly how I use my Mamiya 7. Mounted on the GFX 50R, it even looks like family : ) All said, again, it's a great solution with many quirks. I highly recommend trying this, & thank you Fotodiox!

The Fotodiox Mamiya 7 lens adapter is very nicely made and works great. It permits transfer of lens information to the camera by turning the camera on after setting the lens to f8 and holding down the fn button. The adapter only locks the Mamiya lens leaf shutter in the open position -- by turning the blue ring to the right after starting/waking the camera -- but unfortunately does not offer the ability to use the len's leaf shutter. I'm thrilled to be able to use the spectacular and lightweight Mamiya 7 lenses with the Fuji -- the quality and resolution of the combination is extraordinary.
