Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 Overview

A unique short-telephoto lens well-suited for portraiture, the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is a Sony E-mount prime characterized by its distinct focal length, compact design, and bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. Additionally, a Custom Switch enables making intuitive adjustments of a variety of camera and exposure settings by rotating the lens's focusing ring.

Compact portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
Two high refractive index elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and resolution.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance.
The integrated linear STM autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' focusing systems for quick, quiet, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length and prevents the front of the lens from rotating during use.
Custom switch can used for lens-based control over select exposure or shooting functions, such as aperture selection, with additional settings coming via future firmware updates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Included lens hood helps to block stray light from causing flare and ghosting.

Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 Reviews

Life and death of my lil lens

Solid lens, broke it stupidly so I thought I’d write my thoughts. Optics: 5/5 Super sharp from f1.8-11, when the effects of diffraction start to kick in, making the lens a little less sharp. Almost no chromatic aberration, beautiful bokeh, and some solid sun flares. Use lens hood if you don’t like them. Autofocus: 4/5 Definitely fast enough for stills, fast enough for people and slowly moving objects, a little slow for action shots. Nothing horrible though. Average minimum focus distance, no macro work or anything. Build quality: 4/5 Somewhat smooth focus ring, nice little multi functional switch, and all the peices were fitted nicely together. It’s all plastic and there is zero weather sealing and that proved to be the downfall of the lens; to no one’s fault but my own. The way I broke this lens was pretty dumb on my part. I kept a canned soda in my camera bag, and in the same compartment as my camera. (I told you it was dumb) Of course the can broke and spilled all in my waterproof camera bag, which made all the soda stay in my bag where my camera was sitting. Basically the little Samyang was submerged in soda for a few minutes before I realized what had happened. When I took it out, it initially focused and worked fine but there was a thick fog inside the lens. I got the lens home, and looked at it to discover the lens fog was gone, but it no longer electronically communicated to my camera, so no focusing or changing aperture. My takeaways from me destroying the lens are as long as you don’t submerge it in soda for 5 minutes, it works great and keeps most rain drops outside of the lens. If you plan on going scuba diving I don’t think this is the right lens lol

A portrait focal length that really works

This focal length offers great alternatives to work at a reasonable distance from your subject to either capture head and shoulders or even full body portraits. The size and weight of this lens couldn't be better. The lens is reasonably sharp in the center and mid zone, but does get soft in the corners at the wide open apertures. But that's okay for portraits. Stopped down, to F/5.6 or 8, the image is quite sharp, but all focal lengths do exhibit some color fringing. Samyang has good optical formulas, but less stellar quality control. This is my second copy, the first stopped working on the first day I was using it. So far, the second copy seems to be fairly well centered and functional. If Samyang ever used their quality control processes, they would be a strong contender with the other third party lens manufacturers, but they need to address their QC if serious photographers are to develop more allegiance to their brand.
