Kirk LP-55NSG Overview

The LP-55NSG Replacement Lens Foot from Kirk replaces the lens foot of select Canon IS and IS II telephoto lenses by screwing directly into the lens collar mount with stainless steel bolts using the included T-hex wrench. The lens foot is compatible with most Arca-type clamps and heads, and the double-dovetail design allows other Arca-type accessories to attach to the bottom or the top of the foot.

Made of 6061-T6 aluminum, the foot has a baked-on, textured Sure Grip Coating applied onto the standard black anodized handle that improves handling capability. It features both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 tripod threads and also a QD Quick Disconnect socket, for use with compatible straps and harnesses. In addition, the base uses safety stop screws prevent the lens from accidentally releasing from the clamp when it is partially open. The lens hood can be reversed for storage with this replacement foot mounted.

Kirk LP-55NSG  Sure Grip Replacement Lens Foot

A top notch replacement foot that does the job precisely and looks good too! I had concerns after Canon in their infinite wisdom had moved the lens foot further up the lens barrel from the previous version making it unbalanced (rear heavy). After fitting the Kirk foot, I tested the gimbal balance with my heaviest set up which is the 500mm MkII lens, 2x extender and EF 5DSR (heavier than my 5D Mk IV). I use a Gitzo fluid gimbal and the set up was perfectly balanced leaving just over 1 inch to spare at the rear of the foot. The lens is very comfortable to carry by hand with the replacement foot (much better balanced than the original). A quality product from Kirk that exceeded my expectations. Footnote: Please note I do not use battery grips on either of my camera bodies.

Beautiful copy of a poor design

True to Kirk products, this is beautiful. Very well made and easy to install (sorta). It comes with a very nice T-handle wrench that you can add to your tool collection. The ONLY issue I have with it is that it merely copies a very poor design by Canon. Since the 500mm/f4 Series II lens is so much lighter than the Series I, especially in the front, the foot should have been located more rearward. I guess Canon decided to let the end users add their own plates. The Kirk design replicates the Canon design for the most part. Although it does add a little extra foot rearward, it it not enough to obtain a proper balance of the lens and body when using a gimbal. You can see in the photos that the Canon foot is just in the wrong location, too far forward to obtain proper balance. The remedy is to add an inexpensive plate. With the Kirk design, you have to slide extremely far forward in order to balance. And with the 2x extender, you must remove one of the stop screws to make it work. The remedy here is to mount the Kirk foot in reverse so that you have enough room to slide forward on your mount. Note that the mounting plate has a step and you must install enough washers on two of the screws to keep the them from bottoming out and preventing the collar from rotating. So, it will work for me, but Canon put out a poor design in the beginning and Kirk merely improved on their design by a very small margin. I noticed that Really Right Stuff and Wimberly make products that have the same foot shape and location and are therefore no better. I would also suggest putting a small amount of thread lock on all of the screws so they don't work loose. If Kirk (and the others) had made their feet extend to the rearward about 2, it would be a five-star product. Kirk (and Canon), we expect better than this.
