The 8 TB version of these drives are pitifully slow. Like read speeds of 35 MB/s slow. Like that's slower than the 2.5, 5,400 rpm spinners they were supposed to replace. They are loaded in USB 3.2a enclosures and plugged into a Thunderbolt 4 hub, either my Mac's or my Thunderbolt dock. Other than for backup or archival drives, I'd steer clear of these. They're quiet, that's about the only good thing I can say about them.

Overpriced at this point. But solid drive.

Used to go on sale for $300-$350. Now it is $630-$650. That is why the 4 vs 5 stars. Other than the gouging due to it still being the only consumer 8TB internal SSD and people having picked up on that, it is a solid, reliable, high capacity, thin drive that stays cool, even with large transfers. I get the Pearstone USB to SATA cable and use it as an external drive. Own 4, never had issues. No, not as fast transfer as M.2 but seriously, this is for capacity/large storage that transfers fast enough, not editing multicam 8K footage off of.

If I use this drive as an external drive on my MacBook Pro, how do I format the drive before plugging it into a usc-c port?

You do not need to format the Samsung 8TB 870 QVO 2.5" SATA III Internal SSD before using it as an external drive. When using this drive as external storage, I'd recommend using an external enclosure like, B&H # ROGP36XX01.

Yes, the Samsung 8TB 870 QVO 2.5" SATA III Internal SSD can be used with a NAS device. Just be sure to check that the NAS can accommodate 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives.

This particular line of SSDs are intended for use in desktop and notebooks - not server products. There are SSDs engineered for NAS/server usage - this is not one of them.

This ssd has a SATA connection. It can be used in a 2.5" internal bay or externally by using any SATA to USB conversion.
