Is there any reason why this card would not work ...
Is there any reason why this card would not work on a standard x86 system, such as a desktop, and if it does, is the cache-only limit still imposed, or does it simply pass-through the SSD’s to the host bus like a standard x8 to m.2 adapter would? And is there any mention of what NIC controller is being used?
The is a standard pass through, but would only work on newer generation architectures.

Has anyone tried a 990 Pro? Seems like folks are having luck running the older 970 Evo's but the pricing is about the same now
While not listed as compatible, I can confirm this is now running in my 2818RP+ with two 990's. They have lower latency than the 970's but the throughput is about the same.

Would a Crucial 4TB P3 Plus NVMe PCIe 4.0 M.2 Internal SSD card work with this?
Synology has not listed any non-Synology drives on their compatibility list for the E10M20-T1 M.2 SSD & 10GbE Combo Adapter Card, but any PCIe M.2 2280 or 22110 drive should work.

Synology says they don't "recommend" this card ...
Synology says they don't "recommend" this card with the DS3617xs as they haven't tested it. What gives - why WOULDN'T they test it with a mid tier product? Surely it must work since the card will fit (I am using dual port 10G now, but since the dual port LACP LAG is flaky, and no speed increases usually anyway, seems better to use this card to have some m.2 cache drive space, albeit only at SATA speeds in the ds3617xs).
If I try it, and it works - then I should be good, right?
Yes, though it isnt recommended by Synology you can choose to test it yourself.

How does this card compare to the old "Synology E10G18-T2 Dual-Port 10 Gb/s PCIe Expansion Card"? When using it with DS 1819+ do I want one 10G port and cache drives or just two 10G ports? What's the benefit of two 10Ge ports? I will be using with a Mac. Thoughts?
Cache drives and 10Gb/s ports have different purposes and which will be more beneficial is a matter of use case.
