Olympus E-M10 Mark IV Overview

By B&H Photo's

Sleek but well-spec'd, the black OM-D E-M10 Mark IV meshes many of Olympus's flagship features and technologies with the compact and highly portable E-M10 design. Incorporating the 20.3MP Micro Four Thirds sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the E-M10 Mark IV is characterized by its UHD 4K video recording capabilities, fast 8.7 fps continuous shooting rate, and wide ISO 200-25600 sensitivity range to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization is also featured, which compensates for approximately 4.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

In regard to the physical design, the E-M10 Mark IV is an impressively svelte camera but still sports a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD, which has a 180° tilting design for working from high, low, and front-facing angles. For eye-level viewing, there is a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. Also, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permit connecting the camera to a smartphone or tablet for direct wireless sharing of images or for remote camera from the mobile device.

20.3MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic VIII Image Processor
A high-resolution 20.3MP Live MOS sensor works in conjunction with a TruePic VIII image processor to promote fast shooting performance, a sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600, and versatile video recording capabilities. Ideal for photographing moving subjects, too, the sensor and processor combination enables full-resolution continuous shooting up to 8.7 fps. Beyond stills, the E-M10 Mark IV also supports UHD 4K video recording up to 30 fps, Full HD at 60 fps, and high-speed HD recording at 120 fps.
5-Axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
In-body, sensor-shift image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements that become especially noticeable when working with telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures. Furthermore, this advanced image stabilization system works across five axes to compensate for vertical angle rotation, horizontal angle rotation, horizontal shift, vertical shift, and rolling camera shake movement. This range of detected movements serves to benefit traditional still image shooting as well as movie recording and working with moving subjects more effectively.
121-Point Contrast-Detection AF and Subject Detection
The quick and intelligent autofocus system uses 121 contrast-detection areas for refined accuracy and focusing speed when working in variety of lighting conditions and shooting situations. Suiting working with moving subjects, continuous autofocus benefits from the same subject-detection algorithm used in the sports-optimized E-M1X and, benefitting portraiture, the same face- and eye-detection functions as the E-M1 Mark III also make it possible to accurately focus on the profile, lowered face, or a partially hidden face. Alternatively, manual focus operation is also benefitted by the inclusion of MF assist functions, including live view magnification and focus peaking.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder is available for eye-level monitoring, and it offers a 0.67x maximum magnification for clear, distortion-free viewing.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor features an 80° upward, 180° downward tilting design to support working from a variety of angles, including front-facing for perfectly framed selfies. The screen is also a touchscreen for intuitive menu navigation and image playback.
  • Included BLS-50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is used to provide approximately 360 shots per charge.
  • In-camera battery charging is supported via the micro-USB port.
  • Single SD memory card slot is UHS-II compatible for fast read/write speeds.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth permits wireless image sharing and remote camera control from a linked smartphone or tablet when using the dedicated O.I.Share app for iOS and Android.
Shooting Modes
  • Live Composite is a unique long exposure mode that allows you to gradually build up an exposure over time without overexposing key elements within the frame. This mode works to only record newly detected light sources over time, and allows you to watch as an image develops, making it ideally suited for photographing star trails or other moving light sources.
  • Live Bulb and Live Time settings can be used to produce creative long exposure imagery. Live Bulb lets you hold the shutter open for up to one minute and Live Time lets you press the shutter button once to open the shutter and then press again within a minute to end the exposure.
  • Interval shooting is supported for up to 999 frames with 1 second to 24-hour exposure intervals.
  • Art Filters: Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Color , Light Tone, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama, Cross Process, Gentle Sepia, Dramatic Tone, Key Line, Watercolor, Vintage, Partial Color (18 Color), Bleach Bypass, Instant Film.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ Lens (Black)

Distinguished by its slim pancake form factor, the black M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ from Olympus is a versatile 28-84mm equivalent zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Despite its compact profile, this lens includes an advanced optical design, which includes aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index elements to achieve a high degree of sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. A ZERO coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast, color-accurate imagery. In addition to the optical design and small size, the lens is also characterized by its Electronic Zoom mechanism, for smooth and constant zoom movements, and a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) AF system that is quick, quiet, and precise to suit both video and photo applications.

Wide-to-portrait-length zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range.
Three aspherical elements and one S-HR (Super-High Refractive Index) element are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range. One extra-low dispersion element is featured, too, to suppress color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved color accuracy and clarity.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Electronic Zoom control uses a linear motor to produce smooth, dramatic zooming effects to complement your video recording. Two zoom speeds are available, too, to suit various subject types and recording needs.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Pancake form-factor measures just 0.9" thick and an Electronic Retraction feature automatically extends and retracts the lens when the camera is powered on or off.

Love the Olympus OM-D E-M10

By Heiko

Date: 2022-12-15

I bought the original Olympus OM-D E-M10 camera perhaps 7 years ago. Unfortunately it broke when my daughter accidentally dropped it. The 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens was still intact, and since I loved this camera, I got the new Mark IV version. The first version of the E-M10 has a better design. It looked more retro, which is good! Especially for street photography as people react differently to old cameras - I'm serious. The new Oly E-M10 looks less retro and more like a digital camera. This is one reason why I give it 4 out of 5 stars. And because they moved the mode dial to the right side and placed the AEL/AFL button too far to the edge. The E-M10 still kept the tilt screen which I really like - this is much better than the tilt and swivel screen that many other cameras offer. With the E-M10 you can take photos without anyone paying attention. Last not least I like the Olympus colors. In daylight they are just great. Although I always shoot RAW, these colors rarely need fixing. I haven't tried the 14-42mm lens yet, but even without that lens this camera is a bargain. It's by far the cheapest camera I own, but don't let price mislead you. This camera is as good as it gets if you are looking for a general purpose / landscape / travel / portrait camera. It's not suitable for sports / action / wildlife, though. The focus system is too basic for that. But it works great with face recognition. The Olympus is a micro 4/3 system and as such has twice as much depth of view compared to a full frame camera. If you are looking for razor thin DOV, this is not the right system. But it can be an advantage for regular portrait, travel or landscape photography. In short, at this price it's unbeatable.

If you manage to get this camera on a good sale price it can really be a great value. Fun to shoot with and unique to use a micro 4:3 camera like it.

I'm new to photography and chose this camera on recommendation from a friend. The appearance and build quality are superb. I appreciate the flexibility of being able to shoot in AUTO as I learn how to shoot manually. The UI is a little daunting, but with practice and quick study of the manual, it's fairly easy to pick up. I love my new hobby and this is the perfect camera for my skill level.

B&H sales folks were extremely helpful and very knowledgeable - thank you , great experience .

Disappointed

Camera made of aluminum: and I can't lock shut the bottom cover. I tried numerous times. I am trying to return the camera, and lenses, and a tripod head which is so heavy I can't carry it as I am a petite 5 foot 1 inch woman. I am an advance amateur photographer who was decades ago, an Eastman Kodak Technical Sales Representative who was excellent.

Olympus OM-D EM-10 Mark IV - Replacing older version

By David
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2023-03-08

I purchased a Olympus OM-D EM-10 a number of years ago. I was considering replacing the camera and looking at other smaller format cameras for hiking. I have several M-Zukio lenses which influenced my decision to stay with this camera. The body has improved significantly from the earlier versions. The controls are more like a full frame camera and much easier to use. The earlier versions required many setting changes through the on-screen menu (ISO, for example). Of course the sensor is greatly improved and the images are tack sharp from this camera.

The Memory Card suggested is a Type II Card. Specifically, a UHS-II / V90 / U3 / Class 10. A SanDisk 128GB card of this type costs $164.99. Is this what I need? And have any actual users of this camera tried a Type 1 Card that otherwise matches the specs? (i.e. UHS-I / V90 / U3 / Class 10) Thank you for your answers!
Asked by: John
To shoot 4k video you need to use a V90 card that is UHS-II. The memory card port in the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is made for UHS-II. Using a UHS-1 card will work for shooting still photos but will be slow.

Why doesn't the light change a little bit when I ...

Why doesn't the light change a little bit when I change the aperture so that the f_value changes in Mode A?
Asked by: Chihan
If you are shooting ambient lighting and you set the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV Mirrorless Camera with 14-42mm Lens and Accessory Kit (Silver) [A] Aperture Mode, you set the lens' aperture setting (and your chosen ISO setting) while the camera sets the shutter speed. The point of the semi-automatic modes (Shutter-Priority and Aperture-Priority) is you select one setting while the camera's light meter selects the other setting while attempting to maintain a proper exposure. As such, adjusting the aperture will only affect your depth-of-field when shooting with ambient lighting. You change your aperture, and the camera changes the shutter speed to keep the same exposure (light level). If you want the exposure to change when changing your aperture, you should be shooting on [M] Manual Mode. In Manual Mode, if you adjust the aperture and nothing else, if the aperture is opened, the exposure will be brighter as more light enters the camera while all other settings stay the same. Conversely, if the aperture is closed, the exposure will be darker as less light enters the camera while all other settings stay the same.
