What do I like in a hood? Easy to snap on and take off. This hood has a button for the purpose. Usually, the bag isn't big enough to hold the camera with hood in place, so the mounting and taking off needs to be snag-free. The photo-session might not be hurried, but photogs usually want the in-and-out of the bag to be quick.

Does the hood have an opening slot to allow access to a circular polarizing filter on the lens?

The Canon ET-101 Lens Hood does not have a slot for accessing the filter.
