Schneider True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable ND Filter (77mm, 1.5 to 11.5-Stop)
Key Features
  • Variable 0.45 to 3.45 Optical Density
  • Optical Glass Construction
  • Threaded Front Filter Ring
  • Darkens Entire Image Area
The 77mm True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable ND Filter from Schneider is a solid variable neutral density filter with an adjustable filter factor of 0.45 to 3.45 that provides a reduction of 1.5 to 11.5 stops. This 77mm filter darkens the entire image area, allowing for wider apertures or longer shutter speeds than usually required. The variable density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, allowing the additional required exposure length to be determined. By slowing the exposure time, the level of image blur and sense of movement may be enhanced, and by adjusting the lens aperture, the depth of field may be more precisely controlled. This is especially useful when shooting images in bright sunlight, where achieving long shutter speeds and wide apertures is otherwise impossible.

Schneider True Match Vari-ND Overview

The variable neutral density effect is achieved by stacking highly neutral gray polarizing filters within a filter cell and rotating them to block the desired amount of light. Despite its double-frame structure, the True-Match Vari-ND MKII features a 5.9mm slim profile, which prevents vignetting with most wide-angle lenses.

  • Suitable for still and video applications
  • Variable neutral density filter darkens the entire image area
  • 0.45 to 3.45 filter factor
  • Provides finer control over depth of field
  • Increases shutter speed length
  • Neutral color rendering
  • Rotating ring features indicator scale
  • Slim profile prevents vignetting with most lenses

Grew fungus in between their dual glass layers

Very disappointed by how fast fungus grew in between their dual glass layers. Started to grow in less than 5 months from purchase and despite being stored in a dry place it got quite covered up in less than 7 months. I do film outdoor a lot yet it should be able to hold the weather better or have an easy way to clean it.

My use to date is limited but I am very pleased with the range incorporated into this filter. The markings are clear and fine tuning is easy.

Will the lens hood of the Sony 70-200 GMII fit with this filter installed?
    Asked by: Joel
The Schneider True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable Neutral Density Filter (77mm) front threads are 77mm. Since the filter does not expand in the front ring, you can keep the lens hood on the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens attached.

Hi there! Does this filter have hard stops or does it rotate full 360? Thanks!
    Asked by: Dustin
The B+W Tru-Match Vari-ND MK III Variable Neutral Density Filter does not have hard stops. The markings on the ring are merely reference points of how light or dark the filter will become when turning the ring.

How does it compare to B+W Vario ND 1-5? What is the front size? B+W's front size is designed at 86mm for less vignette. Even so, I did find vigenette at 24mm on my 24-105 lens. How about the color shifting? B+W is shifting green on 1-3 stops.
    Asked by: Tony
The front filter thread of this filter is 82mm. Most filters will begin to vignette to some degree at 24mm. Color shift is nearly always present when using variable ND filters, but how much varies between filters.

The overview for this Variable ND filter states ...

The overview for this Variable ND filter states that the effect is achieved by "...stacking highly neutral gray polarizing filters..." If so, will this filter also work as a good polarizing filter? I need a polarizer + ND filter for waterfall photography, so I was wondering whether a separate polarizing filter is needed in combination with this filter.
    Asked by: Michael
The Schneider True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable Neutral Density Filter (82mm) does not act as a Polarizing Filter. A separate Polarizing Filter is necessary to get the Polarizing effect.
