Manfrotto MVGBF-CF Overview

The Manfrotto FAST GimBoom Carbon Fiber is a length-adjustable extension arm designed and optimized for handheld gimbals. The GimBoom supports gimbals with either a 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 threaded mounting hole, and it allows you to comfortably perform jib-like overhead and low-angle movements. Featuring Manfrotto's FAST Twist-Lock technology, the GimBoom unlocks via a simple twist motion to let you extend it to a maximum length of 3.8' in three sections.

When fully collapsed, it measures only 20", so it's easy to travel with—and even at this collapsed length, it functions as a useful extension handle for your gimbal. The GimBoom is made of lightweight yet durable carbon fiber and supports up to 14.3 lb loads at full extension. Large rubber handgrips allow for a comfortable and secure hold, especially when considering their patterned design.

Booming Good

I purchased this boom along with the Manfrotto 300 gimbal. To be honest, I have not used the gimbal and boom in an actual shoot yet. I'm in the research and learning phase right now. I'm hopeful to get it out soon. I have tried both items in my home, though. They both feel very well made and solid. Typical of Manfrotto. The boom did not flex holding it at an angle with the weight of the gimbal and camera and the boom at its full extension. I did notice something important. When you lock the unit, the two ends stay in the same orientation. This was important to know if you mount the gimbal remote on the bottom. You would want it pointing in the same direction as the gimbal. So, mount the remote first with the adapter plate so you know how to orient the gimbal. Bring a newbie, I don't know if this is a standard for booms or not.

The Manfrotto GinBoom was the perfect companion for the new DJI RS 3 Pro combo I purchased. I loved how it allowed me to use the gimbal on the GinBoom and treat it like a monopod when filming. It allows me to travle with lesss and get more out of the product. It has become attachted to the RS 3 Pro for most uses now. Underslung or over head, and even tripod.

This isn't quite as long when fully extended as I thought it would be, but it is very useful and extremely easy to setup and break down.

Does as it describes!

I talked to your customer service already, and she was very nice. But please do not send me the one with dirt and fingerprint. Obviously, somebody used it for a while. It was so disappointing. This was the first time I ordered a product from B&H, and I had a good image to your company. But, it was very sad when I opened up the box and saw the product. I cannot trust you anymore because of this matter. Please understand how you are wasting my time for the process of returning this product to you.

The Pole is great the markings are deceptive

The pole is genius and works (so far really well) - but there is a label which says UN'LOCK which I showed to someone else and asked them the same question turn it and lock it. With no prompting, they came to the same conclusion as I did which was backwards and top and bottom, not middle. Anyone who has used twist lock tent poles would default to this. Just above it is the part you turn. Anyway.. the directions are backwards IMO which really was a problem in the field once I had a gimbal and camera on it and it dropped with me panicking to recover. The other problem was mine which was I thought you turned the top and the bottom together in opposite directions, it's not it's the center handle part and the top. It wasn't till I got it home that I set it up to resyncronize, a word the marketing guy came up with to mean tighten I'm sure. To summarize, they could have saved me a heck of a lot of frustration in the field with better markings.. i.e. a picture of the (1) very top section and (2) the center pole with arrows pointing in opposite directions saying LOCK rather than what they did which was ambiguous at best, or just plain wrong if you believe like I did it was for the direction of the top section. I get that can't use language selling into so many countries, but you could have done this with less language and a picture. Once knowing this, build quality is excellent, functions excellent. I think it's well worth getting the legs option (another $99) as it has proven really useful for me so far. Glad I did it.

What is the advantage of this in compaison with a real monopod?
Asked by: Hegels
Depends on how you want to use it. A monopod is designed for being upright and on firm ground. if that is how you plan to use it then the Monopod has a very clear advantage (some of them have feet which make them even more stable) If you plan to use it for booming like demonstrated in the photos then Monopods have a couple of disadvantages. 1. They are not designed for being operated like a boom. Normally when you are using a monopod your hand is near the top of the monopod right underneath the bulk of the weight. this reduces the leverage of the payload you are putting on top of the monopod. If you hold the monopod from the far end and raise it in the air (like you would often do with this GimBoom) it may not support the full weight of the set up resulting in bending or even breaking the monopod. 2. Monopods contain unnecessary components. Depending on the monopod you are referring to it may have extra parts that work well for monopods but are detrimental for boom poles. For example its common for monopods to have 3 or 4 sections so that you can compress the tripod down in size more however this is bad for a boom pole. that design reduces the integrity of the boom pole when held from the other end (resulting in bending or breaking). 3. The GimBoom has some features that make it more comfortable to operate such as 2 padded handgrips. Because it is designed to be used as a boom its also reinforced so that you do not have to worry about bending or breaking as much as you would on a monopod. The GimBoom is much closer to a Boom Pole like those used by audio professionals more than Monopods used for video. Its a simple lightweight, sturdy, extendable pole that allows you to get dramatic camera movement using your camera and a gimbal. Monopods technically can work but The GimBoom is designed to be more comfortable to operate, easier to use, and reinforced to ensure that it lasts longer.

If you want something extremely sturdy I recommend the Manfrotto Virtual Reality Aluminum Base (B&H # MABSECONVRUS MFR # MBASECONVRUS). Also consider the FEISOL TT-15 Mark 2 Mini Carbon Fiber Tabletop Tripod (BH #FETT15M2 • MFR #TT-15 M2)
