OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 Enclosure Reviews

It's almost perfect.

This is one of the best RAID chassis available. HOWEVER, I have Frankenstein-ed mine with the Highpoint hardware 3720 RAID card https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1630001-REG/highpoint_rr3720c_rocketraid_3720c_8_port_12gb_s.html This gets you away from the horrid SoftRAID trap and gets you a RAID card that is usually natively supported by OSX. There have been some hiccups with Highpoint over the years but not nearly as bad as the OWC comments. And you get a external 2x PCIe as well as your 4x RAID to boot. If you need more than this you're buying a server, which is much much louder.

Looks good on paper

If you're into keeping your data intact, this ain't it. Find a hardware raid and avoid OWC's software at all costs. I bought mine before they switched to a subscription model, meaning unless I start paying monthly, I no longer get tech support or updates, on their incredibly buggy system. Up until OS 12 I believe, you had to go into a deep dive of turning off certain security protocols to even get this thing to work. Drives have just started ejecting randomly, but there's no way for me to find a solution, because I refuse to pay them for their already abysmal support. The hardware is not the issue, but you can't use this outside raid 0 unless you buy into their service. Avoid and get yourself a hardware raid. The sales pitch about future proofing and flex is all a bad marketing ploy to get you into a subscription service now. I'm going to be looking elsewhere for my archive moving forward.

Reviews complain about drives sleeping. Is there a way to set sleep schedule on when using Mac?
Asked by: Matthew
MacOS does not have a sleep schedule setting for external storage devices like the OWC ThunderBay Flex 8 8-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Enclosure (Software Controller), B&H # OWTBF80C000. It does, however, have a setting (which you can turn on or off) that you can find in your Mac's "System Settings" inside "Energy Saver". This setting is labeled as "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".
