GVM JJL-JY Reviews

This is a pretty well designed big bang for your buck tripod. it is relatively compact but has plenty of height. it is very stable with a small rig and has features not typical of the price point. It's probably not great if you're going in heavy, but it definitely does the job on the compact end.

Very disappointed

I bought this tripod to replace a 10-year old Libec that had served me well over the years. I've bought some other GVM gear that has been pretty decent, especially for the price. Before I bought this one, I read the reviews, including some of the negative ones, and thought maybe they were one-offs. I should have been more careful about the purchase. I received the tripod in early June, and the issues were apparent from the beginning. First, the way the plate and the tripod itself have been designed is very awkward. The plate is pretty long, and in order to make it fit with my camera and lenses, I have to put the camera way up front on the plate, so the plate won't get in the way of the zooming ring (see photos). The quick release lever is too high up on the tripod, so, again, I've had to make adjustments in camera placement. If the camera is centered, I can't turn that lever to lock everything in place. Second, the panning--the head has not insignificant play, so I've had to make adjustments when panning. I've tried everything, but I guess that's just bad design and construction. I can't upload the video to show this, unfortunately. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, just over three months after I got the new tripod, one of the screws that secures the leg locks fell out at some point, so now the plastic lock just hangs there unless it is locked into place. I'm not sure how secure it is with a missing screw, though. I'm giving it two stars because it's pretty sturdy, and if the issues above were addressed, I'd be pretty happy with it. Luckily, I bought it on sale, so I'm only out $140 or so. I spoke with someone at B&H, and they were very helpful. While I cannot return the tripod to them at this point, the manufacturer does offer a 1-year limited warranty, so the B&H operator gave me the number to call GVM and sent me the invoice in case I need it.

The manufacturer has yet to publish a list of compatible quick release plates and as of this writing we cannot physically verify this, as the tripod head is currently not available in our warehouse.

Will a Manfrotto style plate fit?
Asked by: Sean
GVM does not indicate the plate style of the GVM JJL-JY. We recommend using this QR adapter with tripods that do not have a Manfrotto plate style. The Axler quick release would convert the plate style when attached to the GVM plate. Axler QRA-501S Quick Release Assembly BH #AXQRA501S https://bhpho.to/3TFbUyv

How tall is the tripod without the head?
Asked by: Kenstyle
Unfortunately this is not info listed by GVM as they do not sell the head separately. With the head the maximum height is 74.4 inches. We believe it will be around 67-69 inches without the head.

Does the tripod have adjustable pan and tilt drag ...

Does the tripod have adjustable pan and tilt drag or is it fixed? The specs and overview are conflicting.
Asked by: sean
A side mounted knob adjusts the tension of the drag on front-rear, tilt movements. Rotate to adjust with a camera mounted to find the most appropriate setting. A pan Drag/Lock Lever provides both drag and locking control of horizontal head movement. This information can be found on the user manual in the overview section of this tripod: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/614211.pdf
