Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex Reviews

Inherent limitations, interesting results

This lens isn't a substitute for a giant wildlife lens--it is a completely different thing, a way to get tight shots of wildlife without carrying a lot of kit that requires patience, a bit of skill, and good weather. Results are softer than a non-reflex 400mm, particularly noticeable for closer shots. It is manual focus so you need a camera with a decent viewfinder, either a good mirrorless or a DSLR. It is fixed at F8, and I keep the shutter speed at 1/500 to avoid motion blur, which means ISO is pretty high, 3200 even in sunlight (I am using an SL3 on shutter-speed priority mode). Within those limitations, it is a lot of fun to use, and good results if you're not looking for a publishable nature shot. It could be used for sports or similar also, but I haven't tried that.

As expected, but lens hood sticks

I have had a reflex lens before, so I knew all the negatives going in - manual focus, extremely short depth of field, odd bokeh, single aperture. Still well worth the price for a special-purpose lens. It's nicely built, works fine on my D7200 (with the manual 'set up a non-CPU lens' part done) and a quick set of test shots looks as expected. The only problem I've had is with the lens hood. I put a UV filter on the lens, mainly to protect it from damage when NOT using the hood. Attached the hood to the filter. Now I can't get the hood OFF the filter, taking the hood off takes the filter with it. It was a little rough screwing it in but not to the cross-threading point, just scratchy. I'll need to dig out my filter wrenches and keep one in my bag with this lens.

Can the focal length of this lens be increased with a teleconverter?

This may be used with teleconverters that have no optical tube in their design, but not traditional teleconverters (such as Nikon's own 1.4x and 2.0x) that have them.

I am planning to order one for my d750. Will the f-mount come with it Fit a z mount? Or is there a separate z mount adapter available?
Asked by: Raymond
The lens is a Nikon F mount lens. If you want to use it on a different camera than the D750. Like a Nikon Z mount, you will need to get an adapter. This is one option for a lens adapter, Nikon FTZ Mount Adapter BH #NIFTZ • MFR #4185 https://bhpho.to/37kPGgs Note, the lens is manual only and it is not full frame. Used on your D750, it will crop the image by 1.5 times. And you will lose a lot of resolution.

If this lens is already a Nikon F-mount, why does it need an F-mount adaptor?
Asked by: Rolf
The lens itself is a T mount which makes adaptable to many cameras with the right adapter. It says Nikon F mount because it's coming with the F mount adapter.
