The SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens from Tokina is a 400mm catadioptric optical design super telephoto lens for FUJIFILM X-mount camera systems with a fixed f/8 aperture. It offers a compact alternative to standard telephoto lenses and has a lightweight and compact design to fit easily in your pocket or small bag. Ideal for travel, wildlife, and outdoor photography, it provides a 600mm full-frame equivalent focal length.

The SZX 400mm f/8 reflex lens features a T-Mount design, making it easily adaptable to a wide variety of camera systems. This lens includes an X-mount adapter.

The manual focus, catadioptric optical design of this telephoto lens has a fixed f/8 aperture, which is compatible with select camera focus peaking systems and in-body multi-axis advanced image stabilization systems.
Multilayer antireflection coating for efficient light intake and reduced flare, plus high-reflectivity silver coating and a protective antioxidant layer on the back side of mirrored surfaces for long performance life.
Minimum focusing distance of 45.27" and magnification 0.4x can capture small objects, while the 400mm focal length reduces the possibility of casting a shadow on the subject.
Catadioptric design and construction creates a smooth and unusual donut-shaped bokeh.
Wide focus ring provides smooth 270° rotation.

This Lens Will Burst Your Bokeh Bubble

For such an affordable price this lens is worth checking out if you love bokeh. It's manual focus with a fixed aperture and fixed focal length. As such, be aware you might shoot with a high ISO if in darker conditions so you might want a tripod so you can lower the ISO and also b/c there's no image stabilization. Handheld was fine for me but you can literally feel the camera wavering a bit (figured my in camera IS would come to the rescue in this case). It's very light. You'll want to use focus peaking to help identify focus and it seems the focus is linear versus a center spot. It comes in 500mm also which has the same effects so I almost wish I bought that one for more reach so keep that in mind. This is a fun lens to create bokeh overlays with. I give it two thumbs up!

I've felt the need for a longer lens every time I've visited the zoo. I can't justify the cost of a super-long Nikkor, but this Tokina is inexpensive enough that I could talk myself into the purchase. It's small and light enough that it won't get left at home. I'll take it to the zoo on every visit. It has its disadvantages over the Nikkors - manual focus only, not weather sealed, and fixed f/stop. But it's enough lens for my needs. It's sharper than many lenses I've owned over the years, though not Nikkor-Z-sharp. A little tweaking in post-processing and the images are just fine, even with reasonable cropping. It's fast enough with reasonable ISOs for the shooting conditions I use it for. With peaking turned on, focusing isn't bad at all; but I've got years of practice from before autofocus was a thing. I'm more than satisfied with this lens.

The Fuji cameras have a 1.5 crop factor, so this lens will have an angle of view similar to a 600mm lens. It will still be a 400mm magnification.

Is the "donut-shaped bokeh" what we otherwise know as "circles of confusion"?

No. The sharpest point of focus on a camera's sensor would be a single point on the camera's sensor. "Circles of confusion" describes the small area of what our eyes would perceive to still be in "acceptable focus," but which do not fall as single points of focus on the sensor. They are circles slightly larger than a single dot (point), but which are small enough to still be perceived as in focus. Bokeh describes the quality of the out-of-focus area in an image, so "donut-shaped bokeh" are not perceived as being in focus and is not considered circles of confusion. --- The distinctive shape of the bokeh from mirror lenses comes from the design of the lens and the placement of the reflecting mirror in the center of the image. Light enters the optical tube, passes a small mirror, and strikes a concave mirror at the rear of the tube. The light is focused back toward the small mirror and reflected back through a hole in the concave mirror where the camera or eyepiece is mounted. The result is bokeh with a bright edge and a relatively dark center (similar to a donut).

Has anyone been able to use focus peaking with this lens on a Fuji X camera?

This is a very new lens and so there is not much information on real use. But like any lens if the camera has focus peaking it should technically be able to do that with this lens. And with most others that fit on the camera.

Yes, using the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit for Micro Four Thirds on a micro 4/3rds camera is like a 1600mm lens.
