Pentax VD WP 4x20 Overview

Outfitted with a truly innovative design, the Pentax 4X20 VD WP 3-in-1 Binocular can be quickly and easily converted from a simple binocular into either two separate monoculars or, with the optical tubes stacked one in front of the other, a powerful 16x spotting scope. Depending on what configuration you put the 4x20 VD in, the performance will change. For example:

  • As a binocular the close focus distance is 5 feet, but as monoculars that distance drops to an impressive 20 inches.
  • The angle of view constricts from 10° as a binocular or monocular to 2.6° in spotter mode.
  • Similarly, the exit pupil is 5mm in binocular/monocular modes and drops to 1.25mm in spotter configuration.

Optically, the low magnification produces a generous 5mm exit pupil that keeps the scene in full view. Dielectric and phase-correcting prism coatings work together with anti-reflection fully multicoated optics to maximize light transmission to produce bright and clear high-contrast views with accurate color and crisp resolution. Twist-up helicoid rubber eyecups make using them with or without eyewear comfortable.

Designed for comfort and durability, the housing has exterior armor and ridges that provide a slip-resistant grip. The housing is sealed to an IPX7 rating, so you can keep using it if you get caught in a sudden downpour or gets accidentally dropped in a puddle or shallow stream. Since the VD WP is meant to be used by two people when configured as monoculars, the included neck strap can be converted into two wrist straps for security.

Pentax VD WP 4x20 Reviews

Bright, sharp, small, wide FOV!!!

These are outstanding. I was looking for opera glasses, went to B&H to try a bunch, and wound up buying these for myself, and a pair of Eschenbach Optik 4x18 Vision Compact Binoculars for my wife. Both proved to be outstanding. I bought these for myself because of the long eye relief. I bought the Eschenbachs for my wife because they are lighter and easier to focus. The optics on both blew competing options out of the water. The Eschenbachs are considerably lighter, and also focus MUCH closer (a pretty nifty feature). The Pentax 4x20s are much more robustly built and once focused, stay put (but are slower to focus because you have to focus each objective separately). I don't value their ability to work as a spotting scope, but the ability to use half as a travel monocular is actually useful. Long story short, these are surprisingly high quality and very versatile binoculars. Excellent as opera glasses, but suitable for so much more. I think these are excellent for anything where you don't need to change focus quickly (so: good for hiking, nature, distant sports, but not for birding).

Perfect for opera glasses or local hikes

These are by far the best opera glasses I've ever used. 4x magnification is just right for concerts, live shows, parades, that kind of thing. Anyplace you want to get closer yet still see the scene. Most opera glasses are uncoated 3x lenses that look like costume jewelry, but these are genuine Pentax binoculars, just a lower power version. The build quality is rock solid: nothing wiggles, nothing slips. The best feature, the ability to split them in half (!!!) into two monoculars is a very cool party trick that also happens to be very useful. If my wife wants to borrow my opera glasses, I can break one off and give it to her. This is an amazing feature and it really works well. Everything about them can be shared. Even the neck strap splits into two wrist straps. There is one downside: each lens has a full focusing wheel. I guess it has to be that way for them to work as separate little spotting scopes. But if you want binoculars for motorsports or birding, where you might have to change focus frequently from near to far, these might slow you down compared to binoculars with one master focus knob. These are not cheap, and they are not 12x stadium binoculars. They are solid, gorgeous, elegant low-powered binoculars with features nobody else has.
