Apple iMac 27" 5K Display Mid 2020 Overview

Take your creative ideas from conception to completion with the 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display from Apple. Intuitive and packed with powerful tools, you'll be able to take your ideas to the next level, and the 27" display will further elevate your experience, alongside an improved processor, graphics, memory and storage, and enhanced audio and video capabilities.

With a 5K (5120 x 2880) screen resolution, this iMac provides one billion colors and 500 nits of brightness. The Retina 5K display also features the wider P3 color gamut, which provides a larger color space that shifts away from standard white LEDs to red-green phosphor LEDs that more equally represent red, green, and blue. And with more available colors, the images will appear more vivid and reveal greater detail, with more balance and precision. The display is further enhanced by True Tone technology for a more natural viewing experience

The iMac's processor has been upgraded and now houses an 10th Gen 3.3 GHz Intel Core i5 6-Core processor that can be overclocked up to 4.8 GHz, as well as 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM in a 2 x 4GB configuration that can be upgraded to 128GB by using an 32GB module in each of the four SO-DIMM slots. Visuals are powered by a dedicated AMD Radeon Pro 5300 graphics card with 4GB of GDDR6 video memory, and for storage, there is a 512GB PCIe SSD.

Outfitted with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n for speedy hook-ups to your home network, this iMac is also configured with Bluetooth 5.0, as well as a UHS-II SDXC card slot, two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, four 5 Gb/s USB 3.0 Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet jack, and a 1080p FaceTime HD camera. It also has a Kensington lock slot for added security.

Apple's 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display operates using 100-240 VAC at 50-60 Hz and includes an Apple Magic Keyboard, an Apple Magic Mouse 2, a Lightning to USB Type-A cable, and a power cord. Protection is provided by 90 days of complimentary technical support and a limited 1-year warranty, which can be extended by purchasing AppleCare+ for Mac.

This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

Retina Display
Everything looks better on a Retina display, with its one billion colors and 500 nits of brightness. Photos and graphics leap off the screen. Text is super sharp. And for the first time, the 2" iMac features True Tone technology for a more natural viewing experience.
Processor and Memory
iMac and powerful processors go hand in hand. The 27" model offers up to a 10-Core Intel Core i9 processor to sail through heavy tasks like layering dozens of audio tracks or compiling and testing code. It can also be configured with up to 128GB of memory, which is double the capacity of the previous generation, to fly through the most complex pro workflows up to twice as fast.
Graphics
The graphics on iMac make everything a sight to behold. The 27" model brings AMD Radeon Pro 5000 series graphics with up to 16GB of GDDR6 memory for graphics-intensive workflows like editing UHD video or developing lifelike game environments.
Storage
All-flash SSD storage is now standard on all iMac models, bringing high capacity and lightning speed. The 27" iMac can now be configured with up to 8TB of SSD storage with up to 3.4 GB/s sequential read and write speeds, for screaming-fast access to all of your photo and video libraries, massive files, and pro apps.
Camera, Speakers, and Mics
From crystal clear video calls and voice recordings to music and movies that fill the room, iMac is an all-star for communications and content. The 27" iMac now features a 1080p FaceTime HD camera and a studio-quality three-mic array. And the T2 chip acts in concert with the speakers to enable variable EQ and an enhanced bass response, so all your content can have big, balanced high-fidelity sound.
Apple T2 Security Chip
The Apple T2 Security Chip comes to the 27" iMac, with a Secure Enclave coprocessor that provides the foundation for secure boot and encrypted storage capabilities. The T2 chip also enables powerful features like the 1080p FaceTime HD camera, face detection, enhanced speaker bass response, and "Hey Siri" - and makes transcoding HEVC video up to twice as fast as the previous generation.
Connectivity
Every iMac features two superfast Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports and four USB 3.0 Type-A ports, giving you plenty of high-performance options for connecting external drives, cameras, displays, and more. All iMac models come with a 1Gb Ethernet port, and now you can configure the 27" iMac with 10Gb Ethernet for up to 10 times the throughput of the previous generation. There is also Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.0, so you're instantly connected to your favorite content and wireless devices.
Apple Accessories
Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Keyboard pair perfectly with iMac and come included in the box. If you're looking for extra functionality, Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and Magic Trackpad 2 offer some impressive options.

The bad new business model from Apple, the M1 chip made me find this iMac. I disagree totally with the way They are integrating RAM and VRAM into the processor. So in order to get the specs I want down the road would mean big bux, so I got this one to save future $$. This is my 4th iMac over 15 years and with this one I will be on it for many years to come. This computer is superior. iMac is superior. Enough said.

I'm very pleased with my new Mac. I've been a Mac guy for a long time. I bought it for several reasons. I wanted a desk computer. Been using a Macbook for years. Have it set up. It helps you along the way to do this. The shipping was fast and the package was well protected. B&H did a wonderful job.

It's too bad that Apple discontinued this model because it really is the best. Beautiful wide screen and peppy. The advantage of this 2020 model over older ones is that it has both USB-A and USB-C ports, a total of seven. While the Apple store is offering it as a refurb, B&H was able to sell a brand-new one. Get yours before they sell out!

This is the only 27 iMac currently available as new. I needed to update to a new machine and wasn't ready for the new M series machines. This Mac is speedy and quiet.

A perfect replacement for my 2013 iMac! My older iMac was still performing, but it could not process the newer versions of Adobe products. Apple could not support the older model. The new computer works like the older iMac, but has the newer processor that speeds everything up! Easy set up!

I bought this for the whistles and bells, plus I bought a lot of ram for editing my photography. It handles those ram hogging edits with ease, and is very fast too. Glad I got it.

As long as your light room catalog files are on the smaller side, and you aren't using many layers in a single project you should be very happy out of the box. However if you wanted to do so you could upgrade the ram for better results.

Yes, the ram would be 2 x 16 for a total of 32 GB. You can add an additional 32gb pr 64gb the max capacity for this machine is 128gb.

This particular model will satisfy standard 720p/1080p editing but not enough for 4K editing. The base model of the 2020 27-inch 5K iMac suited for 4K editing would be our BH# APZ0ZXMXWV26 (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1582108-REG/apple_z0zx_mxwv_26_bh_imac_27_3_8g_8c_10g_i7_8gb_512gb_rp_5700_8gb_standard.html). It comes with the AMD Radeon Pro 5700 with 8 GB VRAM. The graphics module is what's important here as it cannot be upgraded later. Even better is the Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16 GB VRAM. Thought this system ships with 8GB RAM (system memory), RAM is upgradeable by the user up to 128 GB.

Yes, the Apple 27" iMac with Retina 5K Display (Mid 2020) BH #APZ0ZXMXWV06 is a good option for 3D work inside Photoshop although upgrading the RAM to at least 16GB (32GB ideally) will give you much better performance.

The manufacturer has not published what OS would be installed, but it most likely would have OS Catalina (OS 10.15). You would not be able to downgrade the OS to High Sierra (10.13).

What is the difference between the "New Release" (MFR #Z0ZX-MXWV-81-BH) and MFR #Z0ZX-MXWV-06-BH which seems to have the same specs but is $100 less?

The difference would be the type of Ethernet port. Z0ZX-MXWV-81-BH would have a 10GB Ethernet port. Z0ZX-MXWV-06-BH would have a1GB Ethernet port.
