Korg VOLCA SAMPLE 2 Overview

The Korg Volca Sample 2 is the next generation digital desktop sample sequencer that allows for sequencing of up to 200 samples. The Volca Sample 2 builds upon the success of the original and offers numerous upgrades including double the memory, 200 sample slots, fresh sample set, 16 pattern locations, pattern chaining, and USB MIDI for direct MIDI interfacing and faster sample transfer.

The step sequencer is designed for ease of editing and allows 10 individual parts to be inserted or removed on the fly. Sixteen-step keys enter notes while maintaining visual confirmation of the timing of the notes in a measure. A performance can be recorded in real time. Up to 16 of the sequence patterns created can be stored in internal memory. The pattern chaining affords full song creation.

The motion sequence function records any time-varying changes made to the sound using the knob movements. An active step function allows for skipping steps during the sequence, and the step jump function instantly plays just the key-pressed step. A swing function adjusts the swing playback position, generating the distinctive groove of dance music styles. Get off the grid with Start Delay, which creates swings and grooves by delaying parts to deviate from 16 quantized steps.

A frequency isolator applies changes to the sound by boosting or cutting the low/high ranges with the isolator implemented as an analog circuit. The built-in reverb effect can be switched on/off for each part, and it is possible to save up to six song patterns, each combining up to sixteen sequences. Additional samples can be recorded and loaded using the Volca sample's dedicated AudioPocket App over USB (the internal sounds are overwritten).

Great Sampler & Beat Machine with Live Limitations

Got the Volca Sample 2 several months ago and wasn't immediately drawn to it. I loaded a bunch of custom one shot synth samples into it and it was cool but only recently have I discovered what I believe to be the full potential of this little & powerful machine. First off, any sample you like is perfect fodder for this machine. However while standard sequenced sample playback is an obvious use for this machine and with pattern chaining you can get loops of up to 16 bars, the real joy I have found for this comes from radically modifying samples using the start point, sample length, sample looping, and pitch & amp envelope functions and making one bar loops. By way of the pitch envelope literally every source can become a totally unique drum sound when used in conjunction with the speed (starting pitch) knob. I've only just started making lofi techno beats on this but I already see a never ending world of possibilities in this little machine. The machine converts all samples to mono and also down samples them. The down sampling is pretty cool for adding character and, with the non-resonant low pass filter knob option for each sample, harsh artifacts can completely be tamed. The internal reverb is very useful for creating tails to your samples and creating a stereo image. Each sample also has a panning function for placement in the stereo field. I have used this for creating width between many samples playing, creating a sort of heavy motion to the stereo field. Recently too, I double tracked guitar and hard ones each performance of the sample for a completely wide four-bar loop. The only drawback I have found is that the saving of pattern memories is not consistent. When powering off and on, often times levels or selected samples will not be as they were before. This renders the machine completely useless for live use but for writing in the studio this just reinforces committing within one recording session. Sample transfer from the computer with the Volca editor is definitely a little slow and the slow update of the progress bar does make it seem sometimes that transfer has stalled but I think this is not the case. I completely intend on keeping this unit forever barring the release of future Volca Samples that will make me surely want to upgrade. Truly a unique and very creative sample player/sequencer and a very unique machine for making lofi beats on for any electronic genre. I hope to explore every genre with this.

Great Tool real time and old school feel

Just love this new version Korg's VolcaSample2. Can easily integrate with Logic Audio proX on my MAC with USB and Midi. I use it as a drum machine and controller, as well as a way to manipulate and record tweaking the filters in real time for a more organic feel. This is also useful as a tool for live performances. The manual is cryptic, and so you'll need to ick up how to's on the Net with various tutorials.

if i load a sample into the volca, is it permanently there? like, could I unplug it from my computer, take it on the go, and then I have that sound in it with me?

This unit has 200 sample memory slots, and should store then on the unit itself.

Are the 200 sample memory slots blank when the unit is new? In other words, are these 200 slots *in addition* to the pre-loaded samples that come with the unit?
Asked by: Christopher
volca sample has an increased memory of 200 memory slots; double its predecessor. 50 are left empty on factory settings so you can load either your own original or pre-made libraries. Pattern locations have also have been increased from 10 to 16. The new generation of volca sample comes with a brand new sound library that has been carefully curated to fit the needs of all music producers and beat makers everywhere. This great selection of 150 samples will take your production to the next level, making it possible to make tracks on the fly with sounds that will fit every genre, including recent ones such as Future bass, Trap, Lo-Fi hip hop, and many others!
