What's the difference between this and the QL-800? All I can see is print speed. Is that it? Is the 800 more rugged or reliable?

The Brother QL600 and QL800 are very similar models the only main difference is the QL800 can print black/red labels while the QL600 does not have this label option.

The Brother QL-600 printer itself does not open the files, it is a function of the software. In most cases, the Dymo file will need to be exported from Dymo software.
