Sony LA-EA5 Reviews

Werll-built, may or may not work with your A-mount lens

Sleek, well built, completely functional with some Sony A-mount lenses, partially functional with others. My f2.8 16/50 SSM and f4-5.6 70/400 G SSM II work flawlessly. My f2.8/100 macro has to be manually focused. The best I can say about other, or non-brand, lenses (old Sony kit lenses, Tamron, etc.) is that you can screw them onto your E-mount camera and probably take a picture. My advice...the adapter is cheap; If you have A-mount lenses you don't want to give up, get it and experiment...but start looking around for affordable E-mount lenses.

Works Fantastic With My Sony A7mIV And Vin Minolta AF Lenses

I've gone lens crazy after buying this adapter! I've bought more than 25 A-Mount lenses including the 50mm f1.4, 50mm f2.8 Macro, 100mm f2.8 Macro, 85mm f1.4, 70-210 f4 zoom, Tokina 300mm f2.8, Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3, 28-75 f2.8, 100-300mm f4.5-5.6, and many more. The AF works great on all of them... Whether Minolta/Sony/Sigma/Tokina they all AF fine. Even after my cataract surgery, my vision ain't great so AF lenses is the way I needed to go. This AF adapter only works with the latest Sony cameras such as the A7m4, A7RIV and the A6600 bodies. The AF doesn't work with my A7II or NEX5.

Works Great on A7-IV with Screw Drive Lenses

I own a small selection of 6 early-issue Maxxum lenses. I had decided at first just to use a manual adapter, since the cost of the adapter exceeds the total amount I paid for the lenses. I eventually decided that I had limited need for a fast mid-range zoom. Not wanting to spend the money for an E-Mount considering what little it'll get used, I decided on a Minolta 80-200/2.8 APO HS G. The value and performance of this lens is incomparable. Once that decision was made the adapter was a no-brainer. Together they work well, as do all of my screw-drive lenses. My A7-IV will track AF with the adapter no problem, although the screen area for focus points is somewhat smaller than an E-Mount, it doesn't affect my use at all. The cost of the adapter gave me 7 more very capable lenses in my kit and cost about 1/3 of a new 70-2002/8 MkI. Well worth the money for anyone who wants to use old lenses.

So far this adaptor has worked as expected with my Sony and Minolta A-mount lenses. It's well made. Helps me to not have to spend a bunch of money on new lenses.

Works great, wish it were more broadly supported

I had to buy this because my LA-EA4 doesn't support autofocus for my old Minolta screw drive lenses. It works just as described and doesn't need a translucent mirror, which is a big improvement. The price is reasonable, too, so it gets full marks from me. However, I wish Sony could do better with their firmware updates and broaden the compatibility of the EA4 and EA5. They still sell cameras that can't fully use the latter, and the former is now discontinued, and limited on newer bodies.

Sony’s reveal trailer stated that there’s not Autofocus in movie recording. Is this true for just phase detect AF or is AF not possible with this adaptor?

While Austin is correct that you can do it with the LA-EA4 it's not the only option. The LA-EA2 works the same but is for APS-C sensors. You can even use AF with Screw Drive lenses.

Currently what bodies support screw drive lenses with the la-ea5?
Asked by: David
According to Sony, it depends on your specific lens model and the camera body combination as to whether you would retain autofocus capability with your particular screw-mount lens. Sony states that as there is no "one-size-fits-all" answer to your inquiry, it is best to contact them directly with the lens models you own and the camera body you own or are considering purchasing so they can check your specific camera/lens combination with the LA-EA5 lens mount adapter. You may contact Sony either by calling them at 1-239-245-6360 or by using the Live Chat feature on the support page of their website.
