Shure MV5 Overview

Get a good sound for your vocal or your instrumental recordings with the Shure MOTIV MV5, a gray with black foam USB/Lightning condenser microphone designed to bypass the audio interface and let you record right to your computer or iOS device. With three onboard DSP modes, this mic is suitable for getting a good sound without any fuss. Use this mic in your home setup with your computer, or on the road with nearly any iOS device sporting a Lightning port.

If you need a simple USB mic to record your sung vocals, spoken-word vocals, or instruments—doing so with a quality result—the MOTIV MV5 will come in handy, giving you all the needed cables for computer or iOS connectivity. An integrated desktop stand for the mic is included, and you'll have access to a slate of free companion apps for editing your content right on your mobile device.

Built-In DSP for Easier Recording
With three built-in DSP modes, the mic offers great out-of-the-box sonic options for vocals and instruments. These mods can apply gain, EQ, and limiting for optimal results. Choose Vocal or Instrument modes, or choose Flat if you want to mix the sound later by ear.
For Computers & Multiple Mobile Devices
The MOTIV MV5 works on computers and iOS devices with Lightning ports. It is also compatible with Android devices that support USB Audio Class 2.0 and micro-USB OTG (On-The-Go) connectivity (not all Android devices are compatible).
Cardioid Polar Pattern Reduces Room-Tone Pickup
This directional polar pattern is a great naturalistic form of noise suppression, as it focuses audio capture on whatever is in front of the mic, while minimizing audio from the back and sides.
Stylish Look
The MOTIV MV5 sports a styling reminiscent of Shure's classic Green Bullet harp mic, giving you a camera-ready look.
Monitor from the Mic
A built-in 3.5mm headphone output allows for real-time monitoring.
Broadcast-Quality Audio Capture
The mic can handle audio at broadcast-quality specifications: 48 kHz / 24-bit, which is the industry-standard for media playback. This, combined with the DSP in the mic itself, allows you to capture your sonic source with a level of detail significantly higher than your built-in computer mic.
Seamless Set Up
The mic will work seamlessly with your computer and compatible iOS device, as the unit is MFi-certified by Apple.
Included Detachable Stand
The mic includes a detachable, anodized-aluminum desktop stand as well as integrated thread mount compatible with any standard 1/4"-20 camera tripod thread. You'll be able to either mount this mic right on your desk, or place it atop nearly any camera mount.
Companion Apps for Audio & Video Editing
The mic gives you access to two free companion apps. The ShurePlus MOTIV mobile recording app offers recording, monitoring, and control for your MV5 mic. It provides metering, equalization, and compression, wind noise reduction, and a sound editor. ShurePlus MOTIV Video, on the other hand, lets you record uncompressed audio for video. When used in conjunction with the MV5, the app offers all functionality of the MOTIV audio app, including gain control, EQ, and compression.

As per Shure, some Android devices are compatible however, Shure does not list compatible Android devices. Android compatibility is limited and would not support livestreaming, conferencing, or phone calls.

The "old packaging" version has a California cancer warning (ca prop 65), A) what's up with that? B) does the new also have the same warning?

The new MV5 packaging most likely has the same California Proposition 65 warning. Proposition 65 is a law that requires California to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list must be updated at least once a year and has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987. Additionally, the law requires labels on products sold in California in order to provide information about the chemicals used in these products so that Californians can make informed decisions about items they purchase. For many of the chemicals on the list, there are no threshold limits provided regarding the quantity of the chemicals that will pose a risk or trigger a requirement for the label. Shure does not believe its products pose an unreasonable risk to users, but wants customers to be fully apprised so the warning label is included on their products to be extremely cautious and ensure that they comply with this law. Yes. The MOTIV MV5 includes a detachable desktop stand and also has a 1/4"-20 integrated thread mount compatible with any standard tripod thread. The MV5 can be used with a thread adapter such as the On-Stage MA-125 Mic Screw Adapter (B&H # ONMA125) which features a 1/4"-20 male post and 5/8"-27 female thread to enable attachment of the MV5 onto any standard microphone stand, including those made by Auray.
