Lensbaby Velvet 85mm f/1.8 Overview

A unique short telephoto with distinct classic appeal, the silver Canon EF-mount Velvet 85mm f/1.8 from Lensbaby produces a mid-20th century-inspired image quality that is well-suited to portraiture. Characterized by a smooth, glowing aesthetic, this lens's softness can be controlled by stopping down in order to produce a range of effects from soft and dreamy to sharper and crunchier at smaller apertures. A 12-blade diaphragm also contributes to the lens's aesthetic, and helps to produce a smooth bokeh quality to suit shallow depth of field imagery. Additionally, the manual focus design affords a working distance of 9.5" with a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:2 to benefit working with close-up subjects.

Short telephoto portrait-length lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 136mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture affords greater control over depth of field for working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques, and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Inspired by classic portrait lenses from the mid-20th century, this lens is designed to produce an ethereal glowing quality with soft, smooth tonality that is well-suited to portraiture.
Softness can be controlled by stopping-down the lens: when stopped-down to f/16, the image exhibits a smooth quality with greater central sharpness.
A working distance of 9.5" along with a 1:2 reproduction ratio suits working with close-up subjects.
Manual focus design with a smooth, dampened focusing movement is complemented by engraved focus distance indicators.
A 12-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality that is ideal for selective focus imagery.

Lensbaby Velvet 85mm f/1.8 Reviews

Loving it.

Most of my work is portraits and headshots and being able to get a dreamy, soft-focus quality when you shoot wide open to a nice sharp image stopped down some is a total joy.

Great lens that has a velvet feel in the final images. Does not communicate with your meter.

Incomplete metadata and quality could be better

Some disappointment with this lens. Image quality is as expected and the best part of the lens - I think f/1.8 has extreme effect... The velvet quality is best between f/2.2 and f/4. I was not aware that the lens communication with and L Mount camera is incomplete - only shutter speed and ISO (and focal length) transmit to the metadata file. The aperture value does not, so you will have to write down or note your aperture settings for each shot. Also, this silver version rubs a little between the barrel and the focus ring and is slightly loose - Lensbaby says this is normal behavior. The aperture ring works well and the mount is snug and stable. The focus has a long throw but that can be helpful when fine tuning focus...there is no focus creep. You cannot use a polarizer or adjustable ND filter when the hood is on but that is common with many lenses. Overall, a nice lens for the price and does what it was designed for. Just wish the aperture data transmitted and the quality was a tad better.

Learning curve

There is a learning curve as Anne Belmont describes in using the Velvet 85 lens. The lens operates smoothly and beautifully and makes tack sharp images when stopping down or soft images when wide open. I feel some jiggle on my Sony E mount but there is no light leak. I have also used it with extenders but prefer without them.

I love the soft, retro, creamy look of shots with the Lensbaby Velvet 85mm. I found it worked best with a single subject, less cluttered scene.

Great lens

This is a very versatile, very well made lens. I like apertures f 2.8/4.0/5.6. These apertures afford great soft focus and excellent Bokeh. Beyond f 8.0, the lens gets very sharp. The attached head shot of the elderly lady (my dear mother-in-law) was shot at f 4.0.The photo of her with our dog was shot at f 5.6. The photo of the flower was shot between f 11.0 and f 16.0. Thanks go to Lenbaby and B&H!
