Sachtler aktiv8 Sideload Fluid Head with SpeedLevel & 7-Step Drag for Sachtler Tripods (75mm)

The aktiv8 Sideload Fluid Head uses Sachtler's truly innovative SpeedLevel technology to provide almost instant mounting and leveling of your camera rig on Sachtler 75mm tripod legs. The clamp and stud SpeedLevel system saves precious time leveling your camera rig by eliminating the need to screw on a tie-down knob. Designed for documentary, news, and corporate productions, the aktiv8 supports rigs weighing up to 26.5 pounds. This 75mm ball fluid head features 15 steps of counterbalance and seven steps of pan and tilt drag adjustment, plus zero settings for both balance and drag.

The SpeedLevel technology replaces the traditional head screw and tie-down design with a strong clamp built into the head bowl and a stud component that clamps onto your tripod bowl or other mounting platform, such as a slider. Simply grasp the large lever on the head and pull it up to release the clamp, then press it down to lock your head in place. Partially lifting the lever allows you to quickly and easily level the head.

When used with a separately available flowtech tripod, the aktiv8 enables you to spread the legs flat, getting as low to the ground as your head can without a tie-down knob getting in the way. You can also now mount your head directly onto a slider using a separately available aktiv system stud that screws onto support systems with a 3/8"-16 threaded stud.

The PrismBubble level system is pressed once to illuminate the bubble level to be illuminated or pressed twice to light up both the bubble level and the drag settings, a boon when working in darker environments. The bubble level also has a built-in prism, enabling you to more easily level the head when the legs are at set at maximum height or an awkward angle.

Mount your camera using the included Sideload Plate S that has both a 1/4-20 camera screw and a locating pin to prevent twisting. With a sliding range of 4.7", this head balances quickly to accommodate variously configured rigs The Sachtler aktiv8 head also features a detachable pan bar that can be mounted onto the rosettes on either the right or left side of the head.

Sachtler flowtech 75 GS Carbon Fiber Tripod with Ground Spreader

The Sachtler flowtech 75 GS Carbon Fiber Tripod with Ground Spreader eschews the common single or double carbon fiber tube design and instead has redesigned the shape of the legs for improved torsional strength. The legs weigh just under 7 pounds yet they can support a payload of up to 44 pounds and extend from a minimum height of 10" to a maximum height of 62.2" when using the included ground spreader. Each leg features a single clamping lever that locks and unlocks the sections.

Each leg extends or retracts independently from the other two, and when it is detached from the spreader each leg can pivot without affecting the other legs. This is especially useful when working on rough or uneven terrain. You can remove the spreader completely and lock each leg in one of three positions, so you can work without a spreader if you wish. This enables you to spread the legs extremely wide for low shots, while the tripod legs maintain their torsional stability. The dual spikes at the end of each leg provide extra grip when working on softer ground without the spreader. An attachment point and carry handle are included.

Features
Dual-stage, carbon fiber, 75mm bowl tripod
The design and construction of the legs provide tremendous torsional stability. In other words, the legs resist twisting when you pan the tripod head.
The included ground spreader snaps easily onto the dual-spiked feet using a combination elastic and lever attachment system. The rubber feet are removable from the spreader and can be attached directly to the dual spiked feet of the legs for operation on hard/delicate surfaces without the spreader.
Each leg features a single clamping lever lock design at the top of the leg, near the 75mm bowl. This allows you to loosen all three leg sections from a single location, saving you time while reducing the wear and tear on your body as you don't have to bend down to loosen a leg lock at the bottom to lower or raise the legs.
The legs incorporate a locking mechanism that enables the legs to move completely freely, suitable when working with a spreader, or to lock at one of three angles, suitable for use when working without a spreader.

Sachtler Aktiv8 Tripod System Reviews

Skeptical at first about the aktiv headss

Originally, I was wanting a FSB head with the traditional tie down mechanism, since it's dead simple and pretty bulletproof. However, I will have to say that the aktiv mechanism is awesome and super solid feeling. I'm hoping it'll stand the test of time, but I guess we'll just have to see. For now, really loving how easy it is popping the entire head off and moving to a dolly/slider/hi-hat/etc. The flowtech legs are fantastic, but everyone already is in agreement with that sentiment haha!

I'm totally in love with this piece of art! So incredibly well built and pleasant to use. The sideway level bubble is so useful at maximum hight. The legs clip as the the level clip are so practical.

Fast setup and durable

Changing tripod levels is pretty fast, my setup is about 15 pounds and the head holds that payload well. Good balance of lightweight and strength

This is a good field tripod. It's lightweight yet heavy duty and smooth. It's also easy to balance once it is built properly.

So far, very happy with it. Really helps workflow. So easy to pop the head off and go to a slider etc. Leveling the head is also so much easier and faster.

So incredibly happy with this purchase!

This is my first Sachtler product. I am coming from using a Manfrotto 546B with a 504HD head. I have other tripods/heads but the Manfrotto was my best one until now. Everything about this system is excellent. Here are some of the highlights: UNBOXING Everything is very nicely packaged. The bag is really top-quality, better than any other tripod bag I have seen. It uses chunky zippers and pulls that move super-smooth and stow in a protected flap when closed. There are nice pull handles on either side. The top handle clips together extremely satisfyingly unlike the typical Velcro closure technique on every other bag. The bag is plenty large enough for the tripod and some accessories. It unzips all the way down but it does not open like a doctor bag so the sides need to be spread open a little to remove the tripod. There is a long zippered pocket on the inside. There are reinforced areas on the inside of the bag at the top and bottom. It's just a really nice bag overall, nice ballistic nylon, excellent stitching. There's also a clear business card holder on the outside. The head is contained in a box and uses only cardboard packing (thank you for not using plastic). There is also a handle accessory in a bag and the pan bar in some bubble wrap. LEGS - FLOWTECH 75 These are interesting legs because they feel so much different than anything else I've used, even from other round carbon fiber legs. They are matte textured, feel nice and are shockingly-lightweight. However, they feel very solid and seem like they could stand plenty of abuse (I have seen someone still using their Flowtech after getting it damaged by gunfire in Mexico - very interesting story, search YouTube for that). The legs extend easily using the clamp levers at the top. It is extremely easy to use. But the legs do not extend all the way without a little help, perhaps they will loosen up with use. Once locked into position, the tripod feels as solid as the best tripods I have ever used. GROUND SPREADER I got the model with the ground spreader. It is easily removable. Installed, it uses the standard clip-on feet to attach. The feet use a lever action that makes stretching the rubber straps very easy. There are clips inside that allow you to remove the spreader from the feet so you can leave them on the tripod without using the spreader. There are no tension knobs on the spreader to lock the position. Instead, there are really nice buttons you press down with your foot and the sections extend in 12 different click-lock positions that are all numbered so you can easily see and them from above and make all of the extensions the same. All of the parts of the spreader seem extremely well made and finished. AKTIV ATTACHMENT The instructions point you to a video tutorial with how to attach the aktiv mount. It's easy. If you do it as the instructions say I think that would eliminate any of the other poor reviews of this system. It really is quite nice to be able to mount and dismount the head this way. I typically used a different head on my sliders so being able to mount the slider and the head so easily using the optional (expensive) parts is really nice. Take your time, attach the mount, and it should take only a couple minutes and you're done. AKTIV8T HEAD It's also easily the best head I've ever used. The counterbalance works very well even on lightweight setups. I love the touch and go plate because it's very low-profile, much smaller and shorter than the typical sideload plates. I wish the plates were cheaper, but I think I should be able to find other aftermarket plates that will work. There are plenty of reviews of the aktiv heads so I won't repeat everything but suffice it to say this head is very nice. Smooth with no backlash when set correctly. Backlash has always been a problem when I'm using long lenses. Releasing pan/tilt always resulted in a little movement backwards at the end. But so far, if I have the tensions set correctly I can pan and tilts that do not have any perceptible backlash. CONCLUSION For the price, it seems like I'm getting the performance from a much more expensive system. This is my best tripod purchase ever. WISH WERE DIFFERENT The touch and go plates are way too expensive for what they are basically a flat piece of metal with a hole. They're not made of unobtanium! The pan bar is very basic - I wish it extended. There should be more counterbalance adjustability in the low-end. It seems to go from too much to too little too quickly with lighter setups.

I've had this tripod for about six months, and I've used it/rented it several times over the past few years. I run a production company and use this as my main set of sticks. I've talked to other DPs or ACs and they are either impressed with these if they've never used them or have nodded their head in agreement that these are great. This is the best tripod setup you can buy for a small crew/single operator situation. If you need to be fast and want to adjust the camera height without an AC, this is the best option. The flowtech legs are extraordinary. You can go from full extension to ground mode in seconds. Easier than ever to adjust camera height by that 1 inch to get the shot just right. The handle on the side is a brilliant touch--its perfectly balanced to carry the tripod around comfortably. They've really paid attention to the details here. It's also fast to level the ballhead or move the ballhead from one set of sticks a slider or dana dolly. (One caveat on the Dana Dolly--you'll want to pick up an extra Aktiv stud and the special Dana Dolly 75mm bowl in order to have the best experience with the Dana. If you do, then you can move the head and camera from sticks to the Dana in about 3 seconds. Love that.) The head is very smooth and has good levels of counterbalance and drag. It's not going to compete with an O'Connor that is twice its size and price, but within its class, the Aktiv 8 head is excellent. I use this with cameras between 15 and 20 pounds and it's great. Best tripod I've used for small crews.

Is AKTIV8 Sachtler appropriate for a PXW-Z750 with 5 pound lens with a 96w battery? Wondering if I need to step up to Aktiv10.
Asked by: benjamin
The Sachtler aktiv8 will support up to 26lb payload weight. The Camera is 9lbs and the lens is 5lbs. You would still have room for more equipment. I think the Active8 would be fine. But the Aktiv10 would also support up to 26lb payloads however it has a more stable strong 100mm bowl fitting for the head. The Aktiv8 head would be amaller at 75mm.

Does the Aktiv8 head work with VCT-14 quick release plate? Old school Sony, has 1/4 and 3/8 screws. How does the pin work with that?
Asked by: Kevin
Yes, the Sony VCT-14 plate will mount onto the Sachtler's aktiv8 quick release plate. The Sony plate has a series of 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 ports underneath that are spaced out so that the pin will sit in the 3/8"-16 port when screwing in the 1/4"-20. Apart from that, the aktiv8 main feature is centered around how the head mounts and clamps onto the tripod legs. This is a perfect setup for integrating with a VCT style workflow.
