Sachtler aktiv10 Overview

From Manufacturer

The aktiv10 Sideload Fluid Head uses Sachtler's truly innovative SpeedLevel technology to provide almost instant mounting and leveling of your camera rig on Sachtler 100mm tripod legs. The clamp and stud SpeedLevel system saves precious time leveling your camera rig by eliminating the need to screw on a tie-down knob. Designed for documentary, news, and corporate production, the aktiv10 supports camera rigs weighing up to 26.5 pounds. This 100mm ball fluid head also features 15 steps of counterbalance, seven steps of pan and tilt drag, and zero settings for both balance and drag.

The proprietary Sachtler SpeedLevel technology replaces the traditional head screw and tie-down design with a strong clamp built into the head bowl and a stud component that clamps onto your tripod bowl or other mounting platform, such as a slider. Simply grasp the large lever on the head and pull it up to release the clamp, then press it down to lock your head in place. Partially lifting the lever allows you to quickly and easily level the head.

When used with a separately available flowtech tripod, the aktiv10 enables you to spread the legs flat for extremely low shots without a tie-down knob getting in the way. You can also mount your head directly onto a slider using a separately available aktiv system stud that screws onto support systems with a 3/8"-16 threaded stud.

The active 10's PrismBubble is a built-in prism level with two viewing windows that enable you to more easily level the head when the legs are at set at maximum height or at an awkward angle. The bubble level also has two levels of illumination—press once to light up the bubble level or hold longer to illuminate both the bubble level and the counterbalance and drag settings, a boon when working in darker environments.

Mount your camera using the included Sideload Plate S that has both a 1/4-20 camera screw and a locating pin to prevent twisting. With a sliding range of 4.7", this head balances quickly to accommodate variously configured rigs. The Sachtler aktiv10 head also features a detachable pan bar that can be mounted onto the rosettes on either the right or left side of the head.

Lets start with the good! Super smooth pan/tilt movement. The SpeedLevel is a phenomenal development in tripods. It is life changing once you use it. Combining that with the Speedswap makes it even better. I have a second base on my slider (MYT Works) and changing it is a breeze. The 15 steps of coun ter balance allows superb fine-tuning of my setup. The top and side viewable bubble is not often used but genius. Now the bad! Week 2 of purchase. 1 of the 3 teeth that lock onto the base pins, retracted and never came back. Year 1, The horizontal drag wouldn't go below 4. Year 2 The vertival drag wouldn't go below 5. A friend had the same problem with the drag on the Activ6. Year 2.5 The head has 3-4mm of free movement before the drag engages. Making every movment tilt move unuseable. Now I'm spending nearly $900USD to get it repaired not even 3 years of owning it. I have used 20yr old Sacthler heads that worked like the day they were made. It seems those days are passed.

Not quite a Video 18 but Smooth

So I bought this as a flash deal $700 bucks off. Have to say it's a great deal. Head is smooth as one would expect of Sachtler. So far the bowl locking mechanism holds well- tension is adjusable by the way. If I want to use it on a slider or something will need to get the matching base. The tilt and pan locking mechanism feel distintly cheap- like the many new, less expensive fluid heads- definitely not the same feel as the Sachlter video series, or O'Connor or Miller. You get what you pay for I guess. The other heads I own are the O'Connor 1030HDS and Ronford F3, so gauge my opinion appropriately.

For the 10 and 8 model, beside 100mm vs 75mm bowl, the weight and height. Any difference between it? Like the drag at 7 is same?

The only difference between the Sachtler aktiv8 Sideload Fluid Head with SpeedLevel & 7-Step Drag for Sachtler Tripods (75mm) and the Sachtler aktiv10 Sideload Fluid Head with SpeedLevel & 7-Step Drag for Sachtler Tripods (100mm) is the additional weight and the 100mm bowl size.

The aktiv10 doesn't fit flowtech 100mm tripod ...

The aktiv10 doesn't fit flowtech 100mm tripod legs as advertised - does Sachtler have any solutions yet?
Asked by: Reid
The Aktiv10 Fluid Head is compatible with the Flowtech100 legs, but the process for mounting is different than a standard 100mm ball head. On the Aktiv10, the large lever on the side of the head is used for mounting onto the pin. The pin is to first be mounted onto the legs by removing the red piece around the inside of where the pin sits and use that to mount back onto when the pin is sitting in place coming from under the legs, clamping down the pin in place.
