Optical Performance
  • Comfortable 8x power magnifies the view while preserving the wide exit pupil and generous field of view
  • 40mm objective lenses boost low-light capability without adding excessive weight and heft
  • Traditional Porro prism optical path produces a rich depth of field with true stereoscopic vision for a more "3D" viewing experience
  • 5-element/3-group lens design helps to reduce fringing and distortion, making views appear sharp and flat with little edge curvature
  • Anti-reflection coated optics improve light transmission, contrast, and color rendition
  • Wide 60° apparent angle of view reduces the need to move your head side-to-side, so you see more of the scene in front of you
  • 431-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Large textured slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate, even when wearing gloves
  • 60-70mm interpupillary distance adjustment range

Olympus Explorer S 8x40 Reviews

Great for birding

Great magnification for birding and a nice wide field of view as expected for an olympus product. Very nicely constructed and feel like much more expensive binoculars.

I consider these a bargain

I'm not going to compare these to 4-figure binoculars from Swarovski (which I've tried, as a guide had them) or Zeiss. I will compare them to comparably priced options and a more expensive (and not nearly as good) pair an REI clerk had recommended to my wife a couple of years ago: in that regard, these are great. Olympus simply has superb optics, even in their mid-range and lower-priced lenses, and it shows in these binoculars. You don't have all the features (nitrogen filled, etc.) of much more expensive binoculars, but they are clear and bright, easy to use, offer decent relief, and are not too heavy or bulky. I like them. At 99 bucks they are terrific.

BAK-4 or BAK-7 prism?

BAK-4 or BAK-7 prism?
Asked by: Boris
The Olympus 8x40 Explorer S Binoculars are only defined as a porro prism. They do not state anything about BAK.
