Canon R50 Reviews

Update to Good Scanner buy lousy software

I'm leaving up the prior review in case others have similar issues but I should update it. Canon's scanning software still has some headaches but after I entirely removed the software and drivers rebooted and reinstalled all of the various drivers I downloaded from Canon's USA website, the reliability of the scanning software has improved. It is far from flawless and you can certainly question why Canon had to make installation so difficult. But now, so far, Canon's scanning app doesn't crash as often but it still lockups far more than it should. When that happens, closing the app usually resolves the issue. Of course, you lose anything you have scanned. I can only think that prior problems were because I had not installed all the drivers (particularly the twain driver). Silly me in thinking that Canon would put all the necessary drivers etc. in the installation software. Canon's scanning software is still quite slow. Once you click on scan you can expect to wait several seconds before the app begins to scan the document. There are several features I like, however. I like that the scanning app permits rudimentary exposure and contrast editing of each individual scanned page even when there are multiple scanned pages I also like that the app permits the user to separately define scan presets and locations to save the documents. The presets are convenient enough that I can scan and save only a few pages at a time. My old Epson software was cumbersome on this and it wasn't usual for me to scan 50 to 100 pages at a time. The scanner seems to do a good job on photographs. Most of the time, the color balance of color photos is good but on occasion, the image comes out too dark. But again, that can be adjusted in the scanning app or after saving.

Do read if you have wifi connect issues and MacOS trouble

To start the scanner does as it promises but here are a few things lacking in the documentation. 1. There is no special slot for cards, just place in feeder adjust the tabs to fit and scan, it can eject the card with some force so extend the paper catch all the way out or it will end up on the floor. 2. On MacOS you might need to install the software twice, I believe this is because they have not updated for Ventura as yet so if you run into issues or can't load driver error just reinstall it. Worked the 2nd time on both my macbook pros ( 13 and older 15 ). The software is a bit clumsy and a bit buggy on the Mac. I hope there will be an updated version for us mac humans. No windows problems to really note and the windows version is not as crashy as the Mac. 3. Wifi connectivity! For some reason it would not connect to my wifi ( new wifi 6 ubiquity Ap's ) no matter what, tried the wifi connect tool which will say successful but the scanner still won't connect to my wifi. I even fired up an old linksys to test and I figured out a few things. First 5 and 6g needs to be turned off if you have both bands showing as one ssid. I confuses the scanner as its 2.4g only, after you get it connected you can turn the 5/6g bands back on. Next it does not like special characters in the password, this surprised me and I tried several times but no joy. I ended up creating it's own ssid on the network and hid it after getting the scanner to connect with a not very strong password ( mac filtered so I'm good). WPS works but many enterprise and prosumer AP's don't do WPS. Canons support will be clueless and it's really not on them to know your network either but its now documented for anyone else who runs into wifi connection issues. What stood out is the image quality of the scans, this is the stand out feature of the scanner and it would be a true 5/5 if it were not for the initial bugs. The scan to cloud and everything else worked as promised, once you get it to connect to wifi. Canon please update your trouble shooting faq on the wifi to include above and update for Mac.

Yes it can but you need to install a plug in in the software. Here in the manual page 102 it explains that. https://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/0/0300039460/01/R50_User_Manual_EN.pdf
