Comica Audio CVM-VM20 Overview

From Manufacturer

Equipped with the Comica Audio CVM-VM20 camera-mount shotgun microphone, any run-and-gun videographer, mobile journalist, or vlogger can shoot on a camera or mobile device and capture markedly improved sound quality. The mic's auto-configuring 3.5mm TRRS output allows you to use the included TRS to TRRS cable whether you shoot with a smartphone, tablet, DSLR, or camcorder. And forget about stocking spare batteries; the CVM-VM20 can run off its internal rechargeable battery or a USB power source.

Thanks to the stepless gain dial, the CVM-VM20 offers convenient optimization of your recording level at the mic, so you don't have to crank up the gain (and subsequent noise) on your recording device. If you encounter bass buildup from rumble, engage the onboard low-cut filter to 75 or 150 Hz according to the situation. The included shockmount reduces camera handling noise, further contributing to clean, intelligible recordings.

Auto-Configuring 3.5mm Output
The CVM-VM20 features a 3.5mm TRRS output with automatic TRS/TRRS sensing functionality, making it compatible with most 3.5mm microphone input jacks. Whether you shoot with a smartphone, tablet, DSLR, or camcorder, the CVM-VM20 makes it easier to get setup and start recording. The mic is supplied with a 3.5mm TRS to TRRS cable, so you don't have to change to a different cable just to switch from your smartphone to a camera.
Stepless Gain Control
By incorporating a stepless gain dial with up to 20 dB of boost, the CVM-VM20 lets you easily optimize your recording level without relying on the often-noisy gain stage built into cameras and mobile devices.
Selectable Low-Cut Filtering
With the CVM-VM20's low-cut filter, selectable at 75 or 150 Hz, you can attenuate low-frequency rumble at the mic rather than having to address the issue in postproduction.
Focused Sound Pickup
Whereas most mics built into cameras and mobile devices capture sound from all directions, the condenser capsule of the CVM-VM20 utilizes a supercardioid polar pattern to deliver narrow frontal pickup and effective rejection of sound at the sides. This gives you more intelligible speech and sound effects recording with less overall ambience.
Internal Rechargeable Battery
Equipped with an internal 320mAh lithium-ion battery, the CVM-VM20 keeps you rolling for hours and hours. When it's time to recharge, just use the supplied USB-C cable to connect the mic to a computer's USB port, a USB power supply, or a USB battery pack. The CVM-VM20 can be operated while its battery charges, allowing extended run time for long shoots.
OLED Battery Meter
The onboard OLED screen serves as a real-time power monitor, showing a highly visible meter for the battery. Use the power switch to turn off the mic during periods of inactivity to reduce battery drain.
Lightweight and Durable Housing
Thanks to its metal construction, the microphone is not only tough, but also shielded against radio-frequency interference.
Convenient Accessories
The included shockmount attaches to a camera shoe mount and decouples the mic from your camera, minimizing the transfer of vibrations from camera handling noise. Slip the supplied foam windscreen to reduce noise from light wind and fans. For enhanced protection against wind noise in outdoor shoots, use a furry windshield (available separately). The CVM-VM20 comes with a case to enable safe and convenient transport of the mic from gig to gig.

Comica Audio CVM-VM20 Reviews

It's a $99 mic

The mic delivers exactly what you’d expect from a $99 mic. It's a totally okay mic. The sound is fine but sonically thin. It lacks body and low‐end depth. So the signal comes out feeling a bit lightweight. For the price, it’s a solid, no‐frills option, and you can easily adjust some of that missing character back in during post, but it’s worth asking whether spending a little more on a slightly higher‐tier mic would just be the better investment. I like the gain dial on the back, which is a great feature to help boost the signal but I also noticed some very faint electronic pops when turning the dial. It's a great entry level mic or for those who just need something simple at a very competitive price.

Loved it, I used it in very loud music on the stage with fatboyslim, sat on minimum gain I was still able to add gain later and have some lows freq. in it.

Is the "mic capsule" located at the very end of the mic body as shown in the descriptive image?
Asked by: Earl
Commenting on the Staff answer by David M: The capsule being located at the front end negates the need for the slotted tube. The slotted tube should be there to generate the "waveform interference" that makes a "shotgun mic" directional. The capsule should be located in the middle of the body, behind the slots, to allow the slots to have their function. (Even though a short slotted tube would have limited function, we'd like the slots to do "something" if they are there.) Looks like the slotted tube is only for show; no go.
