How does this item attach to the tripod plate? There is nothing to screw the baseplate into. Giving it one star unless someone can explain this mystery.

There is a button on the side that is required to be pressed to release the plate from the receiver of the quick release, on the CAMVATE Manfrotto-Type Quick Release Baseplate with 15mm LWS Rod Support.
