DZOFilm VESPID 90mm Macro T2.8 Overview

Relatively small and lightweight, the DZOFilm VESPID 90mm T2.8 Lens is part of the VESPID series of lenses from DZOFilm and is well suited for independent and high-end full-frame cinematography. This macro lens has an 80mm front diameter, allowing it to work with virtually any cine-style matte box. The small size makes this lens an attractive option when working with drones and gimbals, as well as when shooting handheld or run-and-gun. The interchangeable PL mount and included EF mount allow you to use the fully manual lens on a variety of modern and vintage cine cameras, while the full-frame coverage supports sensors that have an image circle up to 46.5mm for use on cameras with sensors up to full-frame without vignetting..

The 16-blade iris, which is consistent throughout the VESPID prime lens lineup, creates round out-of-focus highlights that have a more natural appearance and contribute to the lens's natural-looking bokeh. The focus ring features 300° of rotation for precise focus pulls, and the iris ring has a generous 68° of rotation. Cine-style gear rings on the focus and iris rings make the lens compatible with cine-style lens accessories such as follow focus units, lens motors, and lens control systems.

This 90mm macro lens has an image circle that covers a full-frame sensor. When mounted on a camera with a Super35 sensor, it provides you with a tighter shot than if mounted on a camera with a full-frame sensor.
The lens features metal construction to withstand the rigors of daily production.
The common 80mm front diameter allows for quick lens changes, as you don't have to swap out antireflection donuts or adapters to use the same matte box.
This macro focus lens has a close focus distance of 10.157", allowing you to reproduce an in-focus image with a 1:1 object to image size ratio on the sensor.
Each lens in the set has a magnetically attached read filter, allowing you to swap it out with varying strengths of ND filters for exposure control without affecting your iris.

DZOFilm VESPID 90mm Macro T2.8 Reviews

Be aware of the 90mm

I purchased the 21, 40 and the 90 DZO vespids, and I have used all 3 lenses on atleast 7 projects. For some reason, the 90mm ended up getting some haze issue inside of the front element. Not sure how that happened since I take great care of my lenses and I have never put it in any harsh environment or in any extreme temperature changes. I might have just received a bad copy of it. But I believe its just worth mention this issue, since DZO have established their products to be in that high quality caliber. Other than that, the lens is sharp and renders beautifully, and the fact that it has a macro capability. Makes this lens the most versatile out of the VESPID line up. SIDE NOTE: The 21mm and 40mm have zero issues and did not showcase any haze inside of the lens.

So fun!!

When I purchased this lens I also bought the 40mm and 21mm Vespid Primes. Surprising to me I have used this lens the most. The macro detail is so fun to shoot and look amazing. However, if you use it as a portrait lens it gives you a great falloff and a nice bokeh background. This lens is remarkably versatile and probably my favorite.

What is the crop factor on Super 35mm sensor (BMPCC 6K Pro)? Would S35mm essentially lend to more magnification?
Asked by: George
An S35 crop is about 1.5x, which would make the DZOFilm VESPID 90 mm macro T2.8 lens view similar to 135 mm when used with the Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro camera.

The DZOFilm Vespids do not come with both mounts. The DZOFilm Pictor lenses come with both mounts.
