OWC U2 Shuttle Overview

The U2 Shuttle from OWC / Other World Computing is a U.2 drive carrier that is equipped with a PCIe 3.0 x4 interface and fits into 3.5" drive bays. Inside, there are four M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slots, making the U2 Shutter suitable for media production workflows, including video editors, audio producers, photographers, graphic designers, and more. Powered via bus power, the U2 Shutter supports software-controlled RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, and 10, each of which produces performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is available. Additionally, independent volumes are bootable in macOS.

Please note that the U2 Shutte requires a compatible NVMe U.2 host enclosure, such as the OWC ThundeBay Flex 8, the OWC Helios 3S with U.2 NVMe Exchange System, or the OWC Elite Mercury Pro U.2 Dual. It is also compatible with U.2-equipped Windows systems and servers.

General Features
Boldly Goes Where No Drive Has Gone Before
Blistering speed, massive capacity, RAID-ready flexibility, and swappable convenience, which is everything you've wanted in a multiple blade SSD but couldn't get until now. The OWC U2 Shuttle is the world's first U.2 carrier shuttle for 3.5" drive bays that combines four NVMe M.2 2280 SSDs. Built for OWC storage and PCIe expansion solutions, this carrier shuttle can also be used with U.2 port-equipped PCs and servers.
More RAID Options
With four NVMe SSDs, the OWC U2 Shuttle gives you more RAID options than a dual-drive enclosure or adapter card. Now you can harness the power of RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, or 10 via your choice of RAID utilities including SoftRAID, a user-friendly and full-featured software RAID package. This powerful and intuitive software RAID utility offers maximum volume capacity, optimum drive performance, data protection, or a combination of attributes. It's ideal for anyone who needs to safely store and backup massive amounts of data including video editors, audio producers, photographers, and graphic designers.
For Media Production Workflows
Imagine no more tedious and time-consuming drive enclosure disassembly or costly shipping of an entire enclosure to get a day's shoot to post-production. By utilizing a U.2 port equipped an OWC solution or a PC with an available 3.5" drive bay on both ends of the workflow, you can simply ship the compact and lightweight U2 Shuttle to the post lab where it swaps in quickly and economically.
NVMe Server Ready
When your resource-heavy server application has to complete thousands of operations per second, the OWC U2 Shuttle with separately-sold OWC Aura P12 SSDs has the chops to keep up. High-performance Triple-Level Cell (TLC) 3D NAND with SLC caching and a Phison E12 controller with 7% over-provisioning ensure fast and smooth access to large volumes of data. U2 Shuttles are also optimized for a strong and long working life. From running double checks on data and correcting errors to ensuring the uniform use of its flash media, Aura P12 equipped U2 Shuttles are calibrated for endurance as a factory pre-set.

Fortunately I had the right kind of screw drivers where you could put pressure on the top while twisting the body with pliers otherwise I sould not have been able to get the screw loose.

FANTASTIC

I absolutely love this shuttle. It has so many potential uses. I made the move to a Mac Studio a while back and found I had data storage issues. I was using all kinds of external SSD drives and such as well as an OWC Mercury Rack, which was just for backing up to as the USB 3 interface was not fast enough. I installed four 4TB silicon Power 4TB PCIe 4.0 SSD memory modules into the U2 and then installed the U2 Shuttle into the first slot of an OWC Flex 8 Thunderbay. I tied these 4 modules together into a RAID array which gives me a lightning fast 16TB drive. My application is audio and video editing and VFX and have to say.... WOW. This thing is lightning fast.I am very impressed with this shuttle and would highly recommend it. I'm thinking I will grab a few more of these for on set media card transfer and backup purposes. Great product OWC!
