Tilta TGA-ARG Overview

Add stability and control to your DJI RS 5, RS 4, RS 4 Pro, RS 3 Pro, or RS 2 handheld gimbal stabilizer to achieve smooth, steady, creative shots with the Advanced Ring Grip from Tilta. The advanced ring grip lets you grip your gimbal from nearly any angle on its four sides, providing stability, taking the load off your arm, and creating two-handed operation when you're shooting for longer periods of time. It also allows you to control your gimbal and camera right from the left and right powered handgrips and add various other accessories to your rig.

There are multiple mounting points around the ring to mount accessories, battery plates to power the gimbal, or a follow focus, such as the Tilta Nucleus-Nano, and you can relocate the gimbal's battery handle on top of the ring to use it as a top handle. The right-side control handle features a focus wheel that can be used to control your camera via the gimbal's camera control port, and the left-side handle features a joystick to control the camera's focus, iris, and zoom functions, as well as control the gimbal movement. The included wireless receiver allows you to control wireless focus motors such as the DJI Wireless Focus Motor. Each side handle requires one separately available 18650 battery to function.

The ring has a grip diameter of 1.2" and includes an integrated kickstand, so you can set your rig down on a surface for static shots or when it's not in use. The gimbal breaks down into four parts for transport and storage.

Could be great...

I have mixed feelings about this system—there are some genuinely great ideas here, but also a number of frustrating design and workflow issues that make it harder to use than it should be. What I like: The V-mount integration is excellent. Being able to power the entire ring system through a single V-mount battery is a huge advantage, and the internal power distribution through the mounts is very well thought out. When fully rigged, the system feels balanced in the hand despite its weight, especially with a monitor and accessories attached. The modular nature of the rig is also appealing. Once configured, it does allow for a professional, cinema-style handheld setup that looks and feels production-ready. The side controls do offer useful functionality, and when everything is working correctly, it has real potential as a run-and-gun solution. What’s frustrating: The wireless module and overall connectivity experience are not intuitive. Pairing requires a non-obvious sequence of 3 button presses of the power button and the wireless module. The menu system and dual-handle power/activation process are also unnecessarily complicated. There’s a steep learning curve, and a lot of trial and error involved before it becomes usable in the field. Physically, some design choices feel limiting. The handle connector orientation and balance can become problematic depending on how the rig is configured. In my case, I had to move components to the v mount due to being in the way of the wireless module that's connected to the side of the ronin 5 gimbal. I had to rotate the top handle due to awkwardness, but then it fell due to balance issues. Then I rotated the legs and one of the tiny Allen screws got stripped. IT was annoying. The system feels like it requires careful handling—it can scratch easily. Accessory ecosystem: One major downside is that essential functionality is split across multiple separately sold accessories. The power module feels like a necessary component. By the time everything is added (battery plate, power module, etc.), the total cost increases significantly beyond the base system. Overall: This is a powerful and flexible system that can absolutely work for professional run-and-gun setups—but it is not plug-and-play and it could be way better. It requires time to configure, patience to learn, and additional investment in accessories to reach full functionality. I'm hoping it will work with the easy rig I had to buy because this thing is just way too heavy- only issue now... how to connect it to this... Always a problem. This thing could solve so many issues, but instead, I've found it's added more to the list.

Turn your gimbal into a cinema rig

This ring is great. With the additional power module attachments, you can power a bunch of accessories (wireless transmitter, monitor, wireless follow focus, etc.) and make your one man band gimbal into a cinema gimbal. I use mine for commercial productions along with an easyrig, and it's been great.

My question is about the power distribution of ...

My question is about the power distribution of this Tilta ring. Seeing as the gold mount power plate for this ecosystem doesn't work with most gold mount batteries (if it were rotated 90 degrees it would - oops), I am looking at attaching a gold mount battery via a 3rd party clamp, and trying to connect that power to the ring via a cable. Do the D taps of the 'Tilta Power Supply Modules ' ACCEPT power as well as give it? If so I can plug into one, and make up to 3 more hot power modules for accessories, and also power the gimbal?
Asked by: alex
Unfortunately the D-Tap port is only a power output, meaning you will need to power the Ring Grip via a Battery Plate or the gimbal's Battery Handle!
