Superlux S502MKII Overview

Achieve realistic stereo recordings in minimal time with the Superlux S502MKII, a small-diaphragm condenser microphone featuring two matched cardioid capsules fixed in an ORTF configuration. Thanks to its pre-configured arrangement, the S502MKII lets you bypass the time-consuming process of positioning, measuring, and aligning two microphones. With the included shockmount and stereo XLR cable, you can easily attach the mic to a single stand and connect it to mixer channels, panel jacks, or mic preamps.

The ultrathin 0.5" gold-evaporated diaphragms yield a 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response with flat, neutral tonality. Compared to the original S502, the MKII model delivers improvements in directivity, noise performance, and harmonic distortion levels. Each capsule operates on 48V phantom power, which most preamps and mixers can provide.

Matched Cardioid Capsules
The Superlux S502MKII microphone combines a pair of matched cardioid capsules in an ORTF arrangement. It features ultrathin 0.5" gold-evaporated diaphragms and low-noise preamp circuits that provide better directivity, a lower S/N ratio, and improved total harmonic distortion compared to the original S502. It has enhanced sound detail, depth, and realism with a flatter frequency response and improved high-frequency response.
ORTF Arrangement
The ORTF stereo technique uses two first-order cardioid microphones with a spacing of 6.7" between the microphone diaphragms, and with a 110° angle between the capsules. This technique is well suited for reproducing stereo cues that are similar to those that are used by the human ear to perceive directional information in the horizontal plane. The spacing of the microphones emulates the distance between the human ears, and the angle between the two directional microphones emulates the shadow effect of the human head.
Versatile Stereo Applications
The S502MKII is ideal for a very-wide range of stereo recording applications, producing an evenly spread stereo image with good localization, depth, and detailed sound texture. Its flat and wide frequency response and straightforward design provides both experienced and beginning engineers a convenient studio-grade stereo recording or sound reinforcement solution.
Sturdy Metal Body
Built with a metal body, the S502MKII ensures sturdiness for reliable operation in and out of the studio. It incorporates a balanced XLR 5-pin output connector and includes a stereo cable (XLR 5-pin female to two XLR 3-pin male) for easy hookup to microphone preamps.
Includes Accessories
In addition to the stereo cable, the S502MKII mic comes with two windscreens, a vibration-reducing shockmount, and a carrying case. This provides a package that's well suited for travel and safe storage.

Superlux S502MKII Reviews

Field kit additions

I bought two S502MKii stereo mics to add to my field kit. Having auditioned one borrowed from a friend, these will be a decent addition in my arsenal of gear. Primary application is recording our 24 member adult community choir in a variety of unknown and sonically challenging locations. A quick set-up bonus is with the 5pin XLR connectivity. I have several 5pin XLR cables in my kit and simply use a stereo Y' cable to connect the mic to my Sound Devices MixPre6-ii mixer/recorder. If spot mics are required, my Sennheiser MKH435p48's are called into action. All mics pair well. My near term plans are to modify a Sony ECM-680s for M/S output. Simple mod, just remove two components. This will allow me to encode this mic in Garage Band. Then see how well it blends with the S502MKii. While the S502MKii is not a Schoeps MTSC, I am happy with the performance of the S502MKii and the lesser hit to my wallet.

Outstanding ORTF Mic at any price

I bought this ORTF Microphone for a Live Piano/ Oboe concert. Amongst some of the other top condensers I own it played a crucial role in picking up the Balance from the FOH in the Audience. It did an amazing job. I basically used it as my main mic and just filled in the Mix with some of my closer condensers. The recording was of a Piano/ Oboe concert with as many as 12 oboist playing at once. It was quiet, Smooth yet Silky on the top. I thought about the Schoeps but for a 20th of the price I cant see how I could be any happier
