Zacuto Z-Finder Reviews

Almost... but no.

I've got two of these, one for each of our FX6s. The first one is fine. But the design is trying too hard, it's heavy and clunky. Too heavy for this camera, IMO. The optics are good, and its a large eye cup, and is comfortable to use, when your eye is on it. But it's just a lot! The second we bought fell apart. The loupe is fine, but the bracket that attaches to the top of the LCD broke before I even put it on. There are two ridiculously tiny, ineffective screws holding that top clasp together and I mean TINY. Like an 1/8th of an inch or less. And they just pulled out of the holes they're in, and they're stripped. And I've also had Zacuto EVFs and other Zacuto Loupe-stlye viewfinders too. There really isn't any decent competition for their brand, at least in the viewfinder space, so I've bought their products several times over the years and I'm always just a little disappointed. And in this case... a LOT disappointed. The

I bought this viewfinder for 2 main reasons: to operate in bright light and to operate in shoulder mount style. Fot the shoulder mount I am using the Chrosziel elements, extender arm and shoulder pad (not mounted in the pictures here). With the 28-135 it is front heavy, but the possibility of mounting the viewfinder forward is a good point. I am pretty sure a V mount system (so adding weight at the back of the unit) will balance it pretty well. In the configuration as you can see in the picture I am confortable enough to shoot handheld without pain. The viewfinder fits well and the protective element is very important to avoid sunshine hitting the monitor and burning it. You still can use the touchscreen monitor fonctionality if you wish because the flipping system of the VF is really good, easy to unlock. I mounted the VF directly on the original socket provided by Sony to fix the monitor. It is strong enough to support the weight of the VF, so far so good, no need to buy third party mount unless you want to use it different way than I am. The way I mounted the VF provide me with a rather good balance on the shoulder, I can flip the eyepiece, I can turn the entire piece of VF up or down, so I have a good flexibility. Very pleased with this product extremely well designed and solid construction. The locking system give you the possibility to adjust the pressure between VF and the bar of the original socket. The VF don't fall, it stays firm in place, the position does not change, and I am able to change the position without loosing the tab, it is very convenient. Frame and attachment is all metal, tube is plastic but strong. Dioptric adjustment whell is also solid. it is a serious product, not cheap but you get what you pay for and I am very pleased with the image quality. I heard about some users that had to move to see the picture (monitor) but I can assure you that one my eye on the eyecup I am able to see all the frame without moving my head. If it can be useful I wear glasses of +1 dioptrie in order to read, and the VF is adjusted for that. I f I had to buy this VF again, I'll do it right away.

will this, unlike the Loupe from FX9, be firm? and not fall down ?
Asked by: Per
Upon looking at it, because it does have a clamping system with rigid teeth, this should not have an issue with falling down if properly fastened.

Is this eyepiece more prone to screen burning (if left facing the sun) than the Sony FX9 eyepiece? Does it have any kind of IR filtering? I heard the shorter the finder, the more dangerous it is to burn the screen, sometimes in only a few seconds.
Asked by: David
No, the following unit does not offer IR filtering. It is highly recommended to use the enclosed lens cap to block light from entering your Z-Finder when not in use.
