Canon ES-79 II Overview

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

This is the only quality lens hood that withstands a lot of use. I tried 2 previous less expensive versions which were very low quality and brittle.

Not sure how, but the lens hood that came with my 85 broke and I was thankful b&h had one. Came to me in great shape and works great, as advertised

Yes this is the correct hood for the 85 f/1.2L II. i recommend always buying genuine Canon hoods, i have bought 3rd party hoods in the past and they never fit correctly and always caused me problems.
