Buffalo 710D External HDD Reviews

GREAT value! Made in Japan, sales and support based in America. But hard to configure

First, the “you gotta know this” part: This is THE server to buy to replace the internal Time Capsule drive in an Apple AirPort Extreme to support Time Machine on macOS Tahoe (26+) and greater. The new macOS dropped support to write to Time Capsules, which only supported the AFP protocol. Time Capsules can only run on NAS drives that support SMB3. The downside to SMB3: None. In fact, you can forget the interminable waits for Time Machine views to open; SMB3 on an NAS can sort through the incremental file journalling lightning fast. You click on your Time Machine app and you’ve got time-sorted date panes in just seconds. I at first had trouble getting my Buffalo 710 working because I was running low of ports and added an Ethernet hub to the mix. You have an Ethernet hub, but you have to connect it properly. You must go from your cable or fiber modem directly into the AirPort Extreme Ethernet in-port, and from there, to the Buffalo 710. Then you may connect an Ethernet hub to another out-port on the AirPort Extreme to support all your other devices (Roku, TV, etc.). What is wonderful about the Buffalo 710 is it has a single internal disk, which saves money. Other NAS servers have two disks pre-configured as RAID-1. This means that two 2 TB drives (4 TB total) provide only 2 TB of useable storage—the two drives are mirrored for redundancy. While RAID-1 is critical for keeping, say, an engineering department going in an enterprise environment despite a disk drive crash, you don’t such fault tolerance for Time Machine; you’re always working from your internal hard drive or SSD. Time Machine is strictly a backup, and Time Machine alerts you if your backups haven’t successfully run for 10 or more days. What is also wonderful about Buffalo is when you need sales support, you are talking with someone in Texas. And, what about Tech support? Also in Texas! Moreover, Buffalo makes their products in Japan. What’s not to like? I despair every time I must deal with tech-support from third-party support “departments” where all the workers have thick, central-Asian accents... and the overnight waits for emailed responses. I docked one star (four instead of five) because all NAS servers are designed to be do-all devices to make IT nerds in IT departments happy. That means configuring NAS servers can be maddingly complex and frustrating. I’m a retired mechanical engineer who has used Macs since they first came out (1984); I am no stranger to technology. But I was *barely* able to get my Buffalo 710 running without calling Tech Support. What Buffalo needs is a big red “EASY” button on their software configuration app for Time Machine users. If Buffalo makes that, then the Buffalo 710 NAS is a SIX star device to use as a Time Capsule connected to an AirPort Extreme.

Not that good

No ssh access. The nas doesnt show up in win windows network even after manually setting it to smb1. The dlna server is pretty spartan, and the builtin backup only works to another buffalo nas, or usb.
