Buffalo 720D External HDD Reviews

It did two of the four things I needed

I bought the system under the advertised capabilities of being simple to install, securely share data with others, reliably back up data, and securely access data remotely. For the limited usage of sharing data with others who are logged onto my home network and backing up data from my PCs, the system was easy to install and works quite well. I'm pleased with that aspect. Unfortunately, accessing data remotely is troublesome and insecure. To enable remote access, you need to change port settings on your router, which for me involved calling my internet service provider (ISP). This step took multiple phone calls to resolve, including waiting overnight for Buffalo to approve one step of the process). After this port was opened, there were numerous hourly attacks on my NAS from external entities. Remote access is also limited to unsecure communication, so the data-in-transit is unprotected and fully exposed to anyone watching. It goes from "https:" to "http:", which enables anyone watching the network traffic to view the data. As a bonus, the NAS is also advertised as being able to back up data from cell phones. However, it was only able to back up images and videos, and it was unable to back up any other file types. As such, the phone backups are incomplete. I removed remote access due to security concerns, so I'm no longer able to back up the phones. As such, we are using the NAS with its RAID-1 for sharing data and backing data. It's working quite well for these limited roles.

As advertised
