While it is true the physical length of the lens does not change when zoomed, it is not an "internal" zoom. The front element does move in and out when zooming. So there is a change to the external physical shape of the lens. Truly internal zooms have absolutely no external movement. That is not true of the 10-24. So there is an opportunity for dust and moisture ingress at the front element. Using a front filter greatly mitigates this issue.
