Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Overview

Pairing the classic wide-angle focal length with an optically refined design, the black APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. lens from Leica is a fast wide-angle prime characterized by its apochromatic designation. Six lens elements feature anomalous partial dispersion and high refractive index glass, rendering the lens capable of focusing red, green, and blue wavelengths at the same plane in order to virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations. In addition, three aspherical elements with a total of four aspherical surfaces are incorporated to reduce spherical aberrations, providing edge-to-edge sharpness.

The APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. goes one step further, by facilitating true close-up imaging with minimum a focusing distance of just 11.8", surpassing previous M-series lenses featuring a typical close-focus distance of approximately 27.5". With a smoothly engineered detent at 0.7m on the focus ring, the user can feel when the lens steps into the close-focus range and indicates when Live View or an EVF should be used for precise focus and composition. This compact 35mm lens is also distinguished by its compact form factor, making it ideal for use as an everyday lens. Like all M-mount lenses, it features a manual focus design, and a convenient focusing tab for more refined control during use.

  • Apochromatic design employs six anomalous partial color dispersion glass elements
  • Three aspherical elements with a total of four aspherical surfaces for improved edge to edge sharpness
  • Closest focus distance available in M lens portfolio: 11.8" / 0.3m
  • Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low light conditions and adds greater control over depth of field
  • Compact overall design is ideal for use in everyday shooting situations
  • Includes lens hood and leather pouch

Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Reviews

Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. Lens (Black)

Having been spoiled by the clarity of my primary lens, the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH, I decided to order a Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH as my tertiary lens after my Leica Summilux-M 90mm f/1.5 ASPH. In the meantime my Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH has advanced to be my primary lens. As expected, the corner-to-corner performance is outstanding. The closest focus distance of 0.3 m with the Leica Visioflex 2 comes in handy so that I do not have to carry around the Leica Macro-Adapter-M with the more than 1 kg weight of my 90 mm lens any more. The brilliant color redition of the APO-Summicron-M 35mm prompted me to order a 104 cm by 127 cm print which resurrected my previous photographic passion to inspire others. The long wait for this lens was worth it.

Little Wonder

I'm here to attest that this lens does actually exist. As a long-time owner of the APO50 that has enjoyed its combination of ergonomics and performance immensely, I put in the order for this lens the week of its release announcement. After an unbelievable wait of 15 months (even the B&H staff were shocked), I got the call. The addition of the 0.3m focus is a really nice. Leica has started changing over their 35mm Summilux, hoping they can figure out a way to change up some of their 50s. On a Leica body, the performance is peerless. Not much needs to be said here other than this lens will test your photographic ability as the lens is unforgiving. On other bodies that I've tried adapting this lens to, Sony A7III and Canon R5, no matter what aperture, the corner performance falls apart, particularly focusing at infinity. I had better success cheating with Leica's 50mm lenses. The attached samples are shot on either a TYP246 or M10R. I will admit the price is eye-watering and will give you pause, or as it were, gave me pause. But since returning to the computer after that first series of shots, all I can think about is where to go shoot next. Well done Leica, what a little wonder of a lens!

Will a filter fit on the lens with the hood attached? Thanks!
Asked by: Mark
The threads for the lens hood and filter have a separation by quite a margin. So the lens hood orientation is not affected.

How well does this lens work with the macro-adapter-m, given the shorter 30cm focal distance?
Asked by: Eric
We anticipate that it will most likely work, but it might bring the point of focus VERY close to the front of the lens. And if it gets so close it can be really hard to work with, where you start blocking your light source unless it comes in from a very particular angle. Hope this helps.
