Can this screw directly into the threads on top ...

Can this screw directly into the threads on top of the fx9? or do you need the shape cheeseplate?

No, if you can find an open thread and have the room to mount the Pivoting Mounting Plate, you don't need to use the Shape cheese plate. Although, it is recommended.
