Nikon Z5 Overview

By B&H Photo's
Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera
High-Resolution Photo and Video
Compact and capable, the Nikon Z5 is an FX-format mirrorless camera with a well-rounded feature-set to suit both photo and video needs. Its 24.3MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 processor afford wide sensitivity to ISO 51200, quick shooting at 4.5 fps, and UHD 4K video at 30 fps. Complementing the sensor and processor is a sleek but versatile physical design that includes a magnesium alloy chassis with a weather-sealed construction to suit working in inclement weather. A high-resolution 3.6m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder allows for high-res eye-level viewing while a rear 3.2" 1.04m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD accommodates working from high and low angles. Additionally, for easy sharing, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in conjunction with the Nikon SnapBridge app for wirelessly transferring photos and videos and remotely controlling the camera from your mobile device.
24.3MP FX-Format CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Image Processor
The full-frame, FX-format 24.3MP CMOS sensor is paired with an EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. A native sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions and can be further expanded up to ISO 102400 for extreme low-light conditions. The mixture of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefitting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also affords useful speed throughout the camera system, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 4.5 fps as well as the ability to take 8MP when recording video.

Besides imaging, the sensor's design also incorporates a 273-point hybrid autofocus system that uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus for both stills and video applications. This focusing system supports Eye Detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus onto subjects' eyes, along with Face Detection for both stills and video and for both humans and animals.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Capable of recording more than just stills, the Z5 supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 60 fps, with the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory cards or to an optional external recorder via HDMI out. UHD 4K recording uses a 1.7x crop of the center portion of the frame while Full HD recording uses the entire full frame. Additionally, in-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible with the ability to produce a finished UHD 4K video file directly from the camera.
Sensor-Shift Vibration Reduction
Built-in to the body is a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) mechanism that compensates for up to five stops of stabilization regardless of the lens in use. This system also works with adapted lenses, when using the optional FTZ Adapter, where 3-axis stabilization is used. Also, benefitting video recording, Electronic VR is available to help steady footage to suit handheld shooting.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • A large 3.2" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a tilting design to suit working from high and low angles and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
  • A 3.69m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing.
  • Dual SD memory cards slots both support up to the UHS-II protocol for high-speed and efficient photo and video file saving.
  • A robust magnesium alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.
  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.
  • Included EN-EL15c rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 470 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported via USB, even when the camera is in use. Additionally, it is also compatible with optional MB-N10 multi-battery power pack for extended shooting times.
Other Camera Features
  • Creative Picture Controls: Dream, Morning, Pop, Sunday, Somber, Dramatic, Silence, Bleached, Melancholic, Pure, Denim, Toy, Sepia, Blue, Red, Pink, Charcoal, Graphite, Binary, and Carbon.
  • Multiple Exposure mode lets you combine several exposures into one frame for creative effects.
  • Focus Shift mode automatically takes a series of up to 300 sequential images while advancing the focus position in each shot. These images can then be stacked into a single image with extended depth of field, making it ideal for close-up shooting of smaller objects as well as for landscapes and other still subjects.
  • Language support: English, French, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish.
Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens

Covering a useful range of focal lengths, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is a versatile zoom, spanning wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also helps to realize a more compact and lightweight alternative to an f/2.8 zoom. In regard to the optical design, a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical elements, is used to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color rendering in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the optics, a stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. A programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings. Additionally, the lens has a button-less retractable barrel to realize a more compact form factor when not in use.

Standard zoom covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also contributes to the relatively lightweight design and compact form factor.
A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three additional aspherical elements, to greatly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Exposed elements feature a fluorine coating that affords protection to the optical system against dust, grease, and water droplets.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.
Button-less retractable design maintains a compact form factor when the lens is not in use.

Nikon Z5 Reviews

Really enjoying my new Nikon Z5!

I've been wanting a mirrorless camera for years and have been without a real camera for a while. Finally purchased the Z5 and am really enjoying it! It's been great to get back into photography with this camera. It's lighter than a DSLR (one of main things I struggled with with my previous camera) and it's great being able to preview the settings/adjustments prior to taking the photo. I'm am amateur/enthusiast and this camera is a good choice if you're wanting a good quality, full-frame mirrorless camera but not ready to commit the funds for a higher level/professional model.

I do news press style photography and film making. I still use my old d3200 and d3400 this is a add to my equipment. I purchased along with this camera, 1. Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter 1. Vello BG-N21 Battery Grip for Nikon Z 5, Z 6, Z 6 II, Z 7, and Z 7 II Mirrorless Camera 2. Watson EN-EL15c Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (7V, 2250mAh) 1. Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Have been learning for pass 3 weeks and loving it. There are some great features and some ill never use. If you want a basic Mirror less this is it. I am a photographer that uses Fstop, shutter speed and iso.. I got the adaptor for my currents lenses and very satisfied. I will be getting a lens that is specific for my Z5 soon. Yes its all about budget.

My 2nd Z5!

I moved up (I thought) from my Z5 and purchased a Z9, then gave my Z5 to my youngest son. Fast forward to last week when I purchased a second Z5. There is something I loved about that body (and the results), and thought the Z9 would fill it .. it did not, thus another great Z5!

Takes great photos and the in-camera effects are useful but the Live View monitor leaves a lot to be desired when doing Tabletop work under artificial light.

Z5 Review

Very happy with this camera. It is not that heavy and after owning several Nikon cameras, it was fairly easy to learn the menus and other features. I also bought it with the 24 to 120 mm f4 lens. With that lens the camera/lens is pretty heavy, but very versatile. Later on I bought a 28 mm lens and that mounted on the Z5 makes for a great Street camera system. It is very light and nimble. I think the camera would have been better with a built in flash to use as a"fill flash". Now I have to use my old SB 400 as a fill flash. My worry is that if the SB400 dies I'll have to look carefully for another flash like it that is as small and light. Overall the image quality is excellent. I really like how the camera works in the manual mode and with my older lenses (with the lens adapter). The videos I have made are very good. Recommend to get a longer strap for all around carry.

Poor Quality Control

Beware when considering a Refurbished version of this camera and the 24-50 kit lens. I made that mistake and received a lens with visible marks from use on the barrel, and the ring with the focal length mark moves back and forth so that you can't tell what focal length you have. The camera itself has issues with the EVF (snowy image, jittery motion). Save your money for something better.

Very pleased

I looked at the Nikon Z5 off and on for months and thought that I didn't really need it--until I was asked to photograph the wedding of a family member. The reviews of the Z5 by a number of wedding photographers and the current sale price helped me decide to get both the camera and the Z 50mm f/1.8 S lens. I'm glad to bought both. A few days later I took that combination on an assignment for a local online news service, and then usec it later for some shots of fireworks. This combo delivers as far as I am concerned. It's a keeper.
