Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 (ft) Overview

By B&H Photo's

Take your cinematography further with this black Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens Bundle from Venus Optics, which includes the OOOM zoom lens and its vintage look, a 1.33x rear anamorphic adapter for creating widescreen images on a 16:9 sensor, and a 1.4x full-frame expander that enables using the Super35 zoom lens with full-frame sensors without vignetting. The zoom lens comes with an interchangeable PL mount, though the anamorphic adapter and full-frame expander are in PL mount only.

The rear anamorphic is lighter than a front anamorphic element and helps create natural-looking flares, keeping the look of the OOOM lens without introducing the strong "anamorphic lens flare" look to your images. Five shims are included with the bundle for critical flange focal distance adjustment. The 1.4x full-frame expander maintains the image characteristics of your OOOM lens without degrading the image, and it loses only one stop of light while expanding the lens coverage to cover full-frame sensors. The 1.4x expander converts your lens to a 35 to 140mm T4 to T32 zoom lens.

Zoom Lens
  • The lens has been designed to produce images with color and contrast reminiscent of vintage lenses, as opposed to the cold, clinical look of many modern-day lenses
  • The lens covers a 33mm image circle throughout its zoom range, covering larger Super35 sensors and enabling you to use the lens to capture higher-resolution images on cameras with larger Super35 sensors
  • The lens is parfocal, allowing the focus to remain constant throughout the zoom range
  • Minimal focus breathing as you adjust the focus
  • Cine-standard focus, iris, and zoom lens rings allow you to use industry-standard lens control systems such as follow focus units and lens control systems
  • The attached PL mount can be easily swapped out for the included E and EF mounts
  • The lens has a 95mm front filter thread and a 100mm front (includes a 100 to 114mm step-up ring for compatibility with a wider selection of matte boxes)
1.33x Rear Anamorphic Adapter
  • Creates a 2.35:1 aspect ratio on a 16:9 sensor (after de-squeezing on display/projection)
  • Preserves vintage look of OOOM lens with bokeh and flare effects
  • Looses only half a stop of light
  • PL mounted, compatible with a variety of Super35 zoom lenses
  • Weights 9.52 oz
  • Five shims included for flange focal distance adjustment
1.4x Full-Frame Expander
  • Expands coverage of OOOM zoom lens to full-frame (1.4x)
  • Maintains image quality
  • Compensates for optical aberrations of OOOM lens, preserving the vintage look
  • Looses only one stop of light
  • PL mounted, compatible with a variety of Super35 zoom lenses
  • Weighs 11.64 oz

What is the difference between this one and the apparent same model that sells for $5000 on your site?

This Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens Bundle (Feet) includes a 1.33 x anamorphic rear adapter and a 1.4 x full frame expander. the one you mentioned that sells for 5k probably is just the normal zoom config.

Does anyone know how many shims are required to get this to focus properly and stay parfocal on the EF mount? Tried it with 2 shims for the EF mount (on a komodo with the canon VND adapter) and the focus got thrown off when zooming out.
Asked by: Isaac
From what we understand, you're using the Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens Bundle (Feet) (B&H# VEO2510029BF) with the included EF mount, and also the Canon Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Variable ND Filter (B&H# CAMAEFRFDIND). While the lens is intended to be adapted using the included adapters, connections between those adapters and even minute differences between adapters and especially their fit can result in the lens being significantly less than parfocal. That's also true of the distance of the sensor relative to that of the mount of a camera. We'd recommend using the lens with a strong lens support, and also making sure that the procedure you're using for shimming it is appropriate. In particular, since your question was how many shims to use, please note that not all shims used for adjusting the flange distance of a lens are necessarily of the same thickness. Here's a popular video on the topic of shimming a lens: https://bit.ly/3u0rnim

Does this include lens support? If not, is it fit screw size with ARRI Lens Support LS-9?
Asked by: Jess
There is a lens support stud/foot on the bottom of the lens that will mate with any industry standard 15mm/19mm rod support system.

To utilise the 1.33x Anamorphic Rear Adapter or ...

To utilise the 1.33x Anamorphic Rear Adapter or 1.4x Full-Frame Expander on a sony e mount camera. Would it be correct to assume that the adaptors are PL mount, so you would have to keep the lens as PL mount, and buy and additional PL to sony e mount adaptor ?
Asked by: Jonathan
Correct, the anamorphic adapter and full-frame expander are in PL mount only so if you were to use them you would need to adapt from PL to E mount for use with E mount cameras.

Does this product include lens support? If not, is it fit with ARRI LS-9?
Asked by: Jess
The Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens (PL Mount, Feet) (B&H# VE25100T29PL) comes with a Y-shaped holder which would typically be attached to a lens support. Depending on how you set it up, yes, it would be possible to use the ARRI LS-9 Lens Support for 19mm Studio Bridge Plate (B&H# ARK2.47227.0) as part of a means of support.

Has anyone tried using this with the Tilta Mirage Matte Box? Is there a way to clamp it on or does it only work with rails? I notice it says it has a 95mm thread, but a 100mm front.
Asked by: Isaac
The Tilta Mirage VND Kit fits on lenses 95mm or smaller. Unfortunately, the Venus Optics Laowa OOOM 25-100mm T2.9 Cine Lens is 100mm so the matte box will not fit.
