Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Reviews

Upgraded from the EF version and it doesn't disappoint. Very sharp and typical L-lens construction make this a great choice for serious macro.

better than expected

The Canon RF 100mm macro is very impressive for both portraits and macro-photography. As a hand held lens it is a bit heavy so that macro photography is challenging without a tripod. on the flip side wildlife therefore is difficult with a tripod and a small moving target. Patience however is rewarding as the attached photos illustrate. I had to buy a lens tripod ring to sink with my monopod and I purchased an all in one circular polarizer with a variable neutral density filter which can be adjusted independently, to address bright light situations and glare. Overall I am ver pleased with this expensive purchase.

Is this lens compatible with the Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite?
Asked by: Franz
While this lens is compatible with the MR-14EX II Macrolite, realize that after you spend $1400 for the lens and $550 for the flash, you will still have to purchase the 67 mm Macrolite adapter to connect the two.

Is this lens compatible with a Canon - EOS R5 ...

Is this lens compatible with a Canon - EOS R5 Mark II ? And I’ve never used a macro lens- does it take practice?
Asked by: Caitlin
Yes, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II is compatible with the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens. To take a photo of a small item like a diamond on a ring will take some practice. The Canon R5ii does have depth composite. With that feature turned on in the menu the camera will take multiple photos and join them in camera to get a larger depth of field. That will make it easier to take photos of small subjects.

The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens is not compatible with the Canon 5D IV; any lens with "RF" in its name will not work. However, here is an EF-mount variant of the lens that will work on the 5D IV: https://bhpho.to/3yxMIFh.

What is the working distance at 1x and 1.4x?

What is the working distance at 1x and 1.4x?
Asked by: Ed
Focusing distance at 1.4x is 10.2" inches / 26 cm. This is measured from the Sensor Plane. Measuring from the end of the lens this would be 3.6" inches / 9 cm. Unfortunately as this lens has not been made available yet and it is not listed in the specs, we do not yet have information on focusing distance at 1x. Though it would definitely be a longer distance than at 1.4x.

The Eos R7 is not a full frame camera. Do I have trouble focusing on close-ups (plant, insect, face)? Because this lens is a mirrorless lens designed for full frame camera. Is the focus area narrow?
Asked by: BERKE
I would like to add that the lens is 5.83 inches long and the focal distance is measured from the sensor to the subject. If you subtract the length of the lens, 5.83" from minimum focus distance, 10.2" - the minimum focus distance it is about 4.37" measured from the front of the lens. With the provided lens hood attached, about 2" long, the minimum focus distance in front of the hood would be 2.37 inches. I hope that helps.
