Very Poor Design and Very Hard To Work With, I Would Have Expected More From Canon, I found the unit itself hard to assemble and it took me well over an hour to get on the lens without scratching the lens. I finally found a video online that was in another language and that helped a little. I have left this on the lens since I bought it and have no intention of removing it unless someone tries to force me to listen to Lawrence Welk records while dragging their nails across a chalk board, it was really that difficult to get assembled and put on. Canon really needs to come up with something better, this is hands down the worst camera related item I have ever used, why it is not like the collar that is on my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens I will never understand, the collar on that is very easy to use, no effort at all, This one is a nightmare. Luckily I did not scratch the lens itself.

This doesn't really fit the lens. The plastic collar doesn't line up. No instructions were provided. Feels like whoever designed this at Canon is an imbecile.

what is the diameter it closes to and what is the thickness of the band? Would it fit onto the 3 inch barrel of the RF 100-400 canon lens?

Well, the diameter of the RF 100-400 is 3.1 inches and the diameter of the RF 100 f/2.8 is 3.2 inches, I believer, so there is a good chance it would work with both unless you see some impediment.

Is this compatible with Really Right Stuff Ball and Socket head plate system?

It does not have the arca-swiss dovetails built into the collar's foot. You will need to attach a quick release plate to it in order for it to work with any RRS or other brand's arca-swiss style clamp.

So. what does the adapter do? Is the tripod mount the same as the EF 100mm f/2.8L and the adapter just makes the lens fit better?

The Adapter goes on the lens with the Tripod Collar going on top of it. This is a different tripod mount than the one used on the EF lens. The adapter goes on the lens locking into place with notches on both the lens and the adapter. The collar can then swivel on the adapter on the lens without sliding on the lens itself.
