Filter is able to be used with my lens hood which is what I was hoping for. Hard stops are nice, though I think the end point should come a stop or two sooner as there’s a noticeable x pattern that appears at the maximum strength. Good value for the money in my opinion.

I think I have seen some VND's have a total size larger than its threading part, which ends up blocking the ability to mount a lens hood. Does the size of this filter prevent the mounting of a lens hood?
Most Variable ND filters have a larger outer diameter than the thread in size. Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (58mm) has a front and mount thread of 58mm.
However, the outer diameter of this filter is 62mm therefore if your lens hood is not wide enough it may not fit with this filter mounted on your lens.

Many variable neutral density filters either cause a color shift at darker settings or the dreaded "X-effect" on wide angle lenses. Does this filter suffer from those issues?
Any variable ND over 6-7 stops can create the X-effect. And that is the deign and physics of a variable ND filter. And it depends on the lens you are using and the light you are shooting under.
