MagMod MAGSHOE 2 Reviews

Great idea, but the mounting hardware needs a redesign

I’ve been a professional wedding photographer for 16 years, and over that time I’ve used just about every type of lighting equipment imaginable. I had actually avoided MagMod for years, largely because I wasn’t a fan of the bright yellow accents. In a higher-end wedding environment, I personally prefer lighting gear that disappears into the background visually, and I’ve always felt the yellow draws unnecessary attention compared with an all-black or dark gray design. Recently, however, I’ve been making my way back to using speedlights more frequently at weddings rather than larger studio strobes, and I really liked the flexibility of combining multiple speedlights with the MagRing, MagBox and MagSphere system. I ended up ordering quite a few MagMod components, including the MagShoe 2. Unfortunately, this is the piece that disappointed me. Right out of the box, the screw/knob used to secure the MagShoe 2 to a light stand never felt particularly confidence-inspiring. It seemed to have very limited grip, and the entire mount had more play and wobble than I expected even when everything was tightened. Then, at a wedding, I needed to quickly remove the MagShoe 2 from a stand so we could repurpose the stand. The plastic knob had separated/stripped from the metal screw inside it, leaving us unable to loosen the mount normally. This happened with a nearly brand-new unit. That is the part I have the biggest issue with. For something designed specifically for professional location lighting, that connection point really needs to be extremely robust. A plastic knob molded around a screw simply doesn’t inspire much confidence after experiencing a failure like that. As a workaround, I mounted the MagRing into one of my older Manfrotto umbrella adapters instead. Surprisingly, it worked extremely well. It felt more solid, looked more professional, and was considerably lighter, which is especially helpful when an assistant is holding the light on a monopod or boom. The MagShoe 2 does have one advantage: when using a heavier modifier or softbox, its adjustment mechanism makes changing the angle much easier than with a traditional umbrella adapter. I genuinely like that concept. But in its current form, the wobble, the lack of confidence in the stand connection, and especially the failure of the plastic tightening knob make this difficult for me to recommend for professional wedding use. I really wanted to love it because the overall MagMod system is clever and convenient, but I think the MagShoe 2 needs a substantial redesign, particularly around the stand-mounting hardware.

Cool tool

Can someone please suggest a stronger alternative to this? We have one to use with our 42" MagBox Pro, but it feels very fragile, especially when it's windy. We've been using it for now, but fearing the day it breaks in front of a client.

Description says "For use with speedlights a MagRing is required." But the images show a speedlight mounted directly onto the MAGSHOE without use of MagRing. Unclear if I really need MagRing to just mount a Godox860iii wiith Magsphere or Magbounce onto a light stand?
Asked by: Jeff
No. A end-user can us the unit as a stand alone if they plan to use different light shaping tools that are not mag-mods.
