When attaching the mount to a tripod, monopod, or selfie stick, you can use one of three 1/4" threaded ports. You expand the reach of the holding arms to match the dimensions of your smartphone. There is a healthy spring force opposing; it clamps nicely against the sides of your device. The red knob serves as a lock, just rotate it clockwise a bit.
