The VEO3 263CB Carbon Fiber Tripod & VEO BH-160S Ball Head from Vanguard are paired for photographers looking for stability in challenging weather conditions. The tripod features robust carbon fiber legs and easy-to-clean leg locks for efficient maintenance, which allows for longer product life. The ball head supports up to 33 lb and comes with an Arca-type quick release plate.

With the central column raised fully, the tripod adjusts to a maximum height of 70.7". The maximum height with the center column down is 57.7". The minimum height is 5.5" with the tripod legs spread wide and close to the ground. The low height allows you to capture macro, timelapse, and various other types of shots. You can also shoot low by inverting the center column and setting up your camera upside-down.

The tripod legs adjust independently, each to three different leg angles, allowing you to efficiently set up on uneven terrain. One of the legs also converts to a monopod that extends to a height of 73". The tripod also offers two 3/8"-16 threads on the canopy for attaching articulating arms and other accessories.

Exactly what I was looking for

I needed a tripod with greater ruggedness and sturdiness than the really light travel pods but not the size and weight of the tank I already own. This Vanguard looked like it would fit the bill. I've had it for 2 weeks, and I'm impressed. The specs said 4.4 lbs - I actually put it on my scale: exactly 4.4 lbs. I carried it on a recent 2-mile hike along with a 15-lb backpack; no problems. I wouldn't mind if it were a few inches shorter when folded, but that is a cost of having a pod with 3 rather than 4 leg segments. My older pod has lever locks on the legs, and I wasn't sure if I'd like these twist locks. They work great. And I'm satisfied with the ball head and all of the knobs that control ball movement and panning. Rock solid. BH was also its usual efficient self in packaging and shipping.

This tripod is stout, nearly silent, well thought out, and well executed. I couldn't be happier with it (with the exception of the weight hanger hook assembly on the center column - more on that below). >>LEGS: the legs fold out with a smooth action, not clicking/ratcheting, so they're silent. As the legs are spread out they hit detents at about 15 degrees, 50 degrees and 80 degrees, but you can bypass the detents by simply holding their release button until you get to the spread you're after. They fold all the way back in without holding their release button. The leg locks' rubber grips feel thick and well glued on or something, the rubber doesn't try to fold back or slip when I'm twisting them tight. Twisting them clamps a sleeve that in one third of a turn goes from fully tight to fully loose. Fast! So I don't have to re-grip in order to twist to where I can adjust the leg sections' height. The rubber handle on the third leg is thick and has a subtle but grippy texture. That leg screws in/out fast, a little over 2-1/4 turns, and the threads feel tight, high quality. The screw threads on that leg are protected somewhat from sand or dirt because they're up in a socket - a nice detail I appreciate when I have to lay the tripod down in the dirt or sand when I'm using the monopod instead (I live in the New Mexico, lots of dirt & sand). >>CENTER COLUMN / MONOPOD: The center column clamps down tight and holds securely, no slop or play. The bumper on the center column must be just right because I accidentally let the column drop and when the canopy hit bottom there was a nice "thunk" sound, nothing clanky or tinny. Speaking of sound, every move and adjustment throughout the tripod is nearly silent, and where there are slight ticks I can easily eliminate them by going slower or adding slight pressure. Sometimes the loudest sound is the skin of my hand sliding across the satin texture in the carbon fiber on the legs. >>BALL HEAD: Mine has the VEO BH-160S ball head. It's stout too. The knobs are metal where it counts, big enough to get good leverage but not so big as to be in the way. They're tough, rigid, no flex. They tighten with a fairly quick and even feel. The opaque white-on-black graphics and scales seem every bit as sharp and well printed as they are on my Nikon camera. The mechanism that squeezes the Arca quick release plate just barely opens enough to tilt the plate out, but you can remove two set-screws in the bottom of the plate so that it can simply slide out of the ball head instead - if you're comfortable with that. >>EVERYTHING: has a nice black finish. I don't know it its painted or anodized or what, but no shiny metal is left exposed and the finishes are consistently black. And carbon fiber looks and feels so good. >>CARRY BAG: is lightly padded so it feels okay lugging it over my shoulder. The fabric is heavy enough to feel like it's going to last. >>THE ONE THING I'D CHANGE: To me the hanger hook assembly feels like it could use some design improvement. The hook passes though what I'll call the metal bottom assembly's "lid" rather than a "sleeve," so there's some play in it that the two parts can make a clicking sound when lightly weighted in the wind. It's by far the noisiest thing to take on/off the tripod, and I haven't found a way to do it silently. >>THE ACCESSORY I WANT (NOT NEED): I'd like a place to store that hanger hook assembly when I have to remove it to screw the column to the third leg to create the monopod. I'd also like a place to store the metal leg tips or the rubber feet depending what you're using at the time. To store the two Allen wrenches, the spare 3/8-to-1/4" adapter, and the low angle adapter. All these little pieces that end up in the bottom of my camera bag. Maybe it's just a small fabric bag, but what might be cool is a small plastic tough-box with foam cutouts or clips to hold the parts and pieces. The box could be attached to one of the threaded sockets on the canopy side maybe? >>BOTTOM LINE THOUGH: I love this tripod, it's stout, it's tight, it's precision and it's going to hold up for years.
